.The Ocean Race Learning, established in 2017, aims to increase ocean literacy, inspire positive action, and drive community-level change to protect and restore ocean health. Drawing on a unique perspective of the marine world, it provides an exciting and engaging backdrop for learning, helping younger generations understand what makes the ocean extraordinary. Through its award-winning programmes, The Ocean Race highlights both the threats facing the ocean and the solutions available, empowering young people to take meaningful action to support healthy seas. Its free, high-quality learning resources—designed for schools, home learning, communities, youth groups, and sailing clubs—have been developed and continually refined by an interdisciplinary team of educators, marine biologists, and graphic designers

.Over the next two years, we aim to expand our reach, strengthen partnerships, and enhance the impact of our educational programmes. We will broaden engagement through increased outreach and collaboration, deepen relationships with schools and sailing communities, and contribute actively to youth, diversity, and organisational learning initiatives. As we prepare for The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027, our focus includes delivering a strong ocean literacy presence at Ocean Live Park and creating inclusive, meaningful experiences with host cities and partners. We will also refine data gathering and reporting to support continuous improvement and ensure our work continues to inspire positive action for the ocean.

Your Role

As Ocean Literacy & Learning Coordinator, you will play a key role in expanding the reach, quality, and impact of The Ocean Race Learning Programme and ocean literacy initiatives, including on-water experiences. Working closely with the Senior Learning Advisor and Racing For The Ocean department, you will support the strategic development of ocean literacy initiatives, build relationships with schools and sailing communities, and diversify and grow participation in the Learning programme. You will lead on outreach and engagement activities, manage core learning initiatives and contribute to the promotion of the programme through communications, events, and conference participation.

A central focus of your role is ensuring meaningful learning engagement throughout The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027, including developing and delivering onsite learning activations and inclusive sailing events in host cities and at Ocean Live Park. You will also support internal ocean literacy efforts and youth and diversity initiatives across the organisation.

Data collection, evaluation, and reporting are essential components, ensuring that insights from learners, educators, partners, and host cities inform continuous improvement. Overall, you will contribute to making ocean literacy more accessible, engaging, and impactful for communities around the world.

Key Responsibilities


Outreach

  • Develop and activate on an outreach plan designed to increase sign ups to the Learning Programme.
  • Connect and engage with schools and sailing communities to promote and encourage engagement with the Learning Programme.
  • Improve on the diversity of sign ups to the Learning Programme.
  • Send out quarterly newsletters to the Learning mailing list.
  • Develop and activate on a plan for ocean literacy engagement with The Ocean Race staff.
  • Contribute to the comms plan for the Learning Programme.
  • Contribute to the pedagogical credibility of the Learning Programme by supporting at conferences and educational events, where relevant.

Engagement

  • Support the Senior Learning Advisor to activate on the strategic development plan.
  • Build longer-term relationships with identified schools and sailing communities using the Learning Programme.
  • Coordinate the learning competition for The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026.
  • Develop and manage the Virtual Sailor Visit programme, including during The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026.
  • Support the Senior Learning Advisor with the internship programmes, events and clinics, where relevant.
  • Support the development and activation of the Youth & Diversity Council.

Race engagement and Ocean Live Park

  • Develop and manage onsite ocean literacy and learning activations in each host city for The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027.
  • Develop and deliver inclusive sailing events and water experiences for The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027.

Data Gathering

  • Collate quantitative and qualitative data on the Learning Programme and Ocean Live Park experience from key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to reports and updates.

Travel & Support

  • Travel to multiple stopovers during The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027 to oversee and support learning activations.
  • Provide general support to the Racing For The Ocean team as needed throughout the duration of the event.

General Support & Event Contribution

  • Assist colleagues in the production and success of The Ocean Race events.
  • Contribute to sustainability initiatives, reflecting The Ocean Race's commitment to ocean conservation.

Qualifications & Skills

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience in education, outreach, community engagement, or programme coordination—ideally within environmental education, ocean literacy, sustainability, sailing education, or youth-focused initiatives.
  • Understanding of pedagogical approaches and the ability to support the credibility and educational value of learning programmes.
  • Familiarity with school environments, youth organisations, and sailing communities.
  • Experience developing and delivering events, workshops, or public-facing activations.
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles and experience supporting youth or diversity initiatives is beneficial.

Communication & Outreach

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage educators, young people, and community partners across diverse contexts.
  • Experience creating outreach materials, newsletters, or supporting communications plans.
  • Confidence presenting to groups and representing an organisation at conferences, webinars, or stakeholder events.
  • Ability to build relationships with new communities and contribute to expanding geographic and demographic reach.

Programme & Project Management

  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to meet milestones and deliver multiple initiatives on schedule.
  • Experience coordinating competitions, campaigns, or multi-step educational programmes is an asset.
  • Ability to manage virtual and in-person events, including logistical planning and stakeholder coordination.
  • Comfortable supporting interns, youth councils, or volunteers

Event Delivery & Race Engagement

  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging onsite experiences for public audiences, ideally in partnership with external stakeholders or host cities.
  • Experience planning inclusive events or activities that connect communities with ocean, environmental, or STEM themes.
  • Willingness to travel to race host cities and support on-the-ground activations during The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026 and The Ocean Race 2027.

Data, Reporting & Evaluation

  • Experience collecting and managing quantitative and qualitative data from participants or stakeholders.
  • Ability to design feedback tools (e.g., surveys) and synthesise insights into clear reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow up on data gaps or stakeholder input.

Additional Considerations

  • Live in or be able to relocate to Alicante, Spain.
  • EU national or ability to obtain necessary EU working permits.
