Tanker Operator

Overview

Tanker Operators are intermediaries between tanker vessel owners and charterers. Once commercial freight terms and details have been agreed, the operator coordinates, oversees, and assists with the physical voyage.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensuring updates and information is sent by the Owners/Vessel Master in line with the requirements/orders of the governing Charter party and voyage orders.
• Able to confidently work with a range of shipping and operational software platforms and quickly adapt to new systems as required.
• Directing progress of a voyage, availability of cargo and berths, declaration of options etc.
• Effective communications with internal teams (e.g. Chartering, Claims, Legal, and Finance) to ensure alignment across all voyage-related matters.
• Build relationships and collaboration with Ship Owners and Charterers and provide proactive communication between agents, owners, ships, ports, charterers, suppliers, and receivers.
• Work closely with ships transitioning our desks in Houston, London, Dubai, Singapore and Melbourne as a seamless global team
• Interpret and act on any information or messages, seek outstanding details, anticipate forward implications, and offer advice and support.
• Understanding of charterparty and contract T&Cs and legalities and the associated responsibilities and liabilities of Owners and Charterers.
• Technical insight into the mechanics of shipping Clean and Dirty Oil Products in unpredictable seas, tides, weather conditions, and physical restrictions.
• Proactive minimization of exposure to demurrage, dead freight, restrictions etc.
• Provide advice to create a favourable outcome if nomination does not meet agreed terms or partners are unable to perform.
• To follow a balanced share of the voyage workload, it is expected you are capable of following no less than 15 voyages at any given time. Actual workload will always be market dependent.
• Evaluation of contractual performance by compiling and interpreting Key Performance Statistics.
• Engage with and partake in operation review meetings.
• Mediation of disputes/claims – facilitate resolution
• Responsible for updating internal Voyage Management system regularly with accurate data to support operational visibility and service reliability.
• Participation in the weekend duty rota, ensuring continuity of service outside standard working hours. Cover is rotated across the team and involves remote on-call support.
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement across the global operations team.
• Any other duties that may be required by your line manager.

• Availability out of office hours – shipping is a 24/7 business, and the role requires attention during evenings and nights including reading and sending of mails and taking telephone calls where required.

Qualifications

• Maritime related degree or officer at sea is preferred
• Previous experience in shipping operations is preferred; related experience in a maritime or logistics role is essential.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office especially Excel and PowerPoint.
• Fluent in English & Spanish additional languages could be an advantage.
