Principal Data Scientist

We are seeking an accomplished and highly experienced
Principal Data Scientist
to join our international Artificial Intelligence organisation within IAG and lead the development and delivery of advanced AI solutions across multiple business domains.

It is necessary to have a high level of English and Spanish, and to currently reside in Barcelona and/or the surrounding area

What will your day to day be like?

As a
Principal Data Scientist
, you will act as the strategic leader of the Data Science team, ensuring the highest standards of technical excellence, scientific rigour, and business relevance across all AI initiatives.

You will report directly to the
Chief AI Scientist
, playing a key role in shaping the group-wide AI strategy and driving the successful deployment of scalable, production-grade AI solutions that generate measurable business impact.

This position operates in a highly collaborative and influential capacity, requiring frequent international travel to engage with senior stakeholders and ensure alignment between AI initiatives and organisational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as the principal authority on the quality, robustness, and business relevance of all Data Science deliverables, ensuring the team upholds rigorous scientific and technical standards.
• Provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the Data Science team, fostering innovation in the creation of advanced, scalable AI tools.
• Direct the design, development, and deployment of AI solutions across multiple domains within the group, ensuring measurable and scalable business impact.
• Collaborate closely with key business stakeholders and cross-functional teams, including regular international travel, guaranteeing strong alignment between Data Science initiatives and organisational goals.
• Lead the justification, communication, and stakeholder endorsement of model choices, deployment strategies, and algorithmic approaches.
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, business-aligned insights that enable informed decision-making among non-technical stakeholders.
• Stay at the forefront of AI advancements, proactively integrating emerging algorithms and methodologies to enhance the performance and competitiveness of our solutions.

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

• PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in Data Science and AI, with a proven track record of leading high-impact projects and teams that deliver tangible business outcomes.
• Extensive experience establishing and maintaining quality assurance and governance frameworks for Data Science initiatives.
• Exceptional ability to distil complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences, fostering clarity and strong stakeholder engagement.
• Significant consultancy experience, with outstanding capacity to influence, advise, and build strong relationships with stakeholders at all organisational levels.
• Advanced proficiency in multiple Data Science disciplines (machine learning, deep learning, optimisation, simulation, generative AI, etc.) with solid understanding of their mathematical foundations.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and convert complex technical insights into actionable business strategies.
• Demonstrated expertise in AI governance, ethical frameworks, and regulatory compliance.
