The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to play a key role within Arup Spain's Digital team, contributing at a strategic and technical level to some of the most complex and innovative projects in the built environment.

The Senior Software Architect will work closely with digital engineering practitioners, enabling and accelerating the development of advanced digital capabilities and services. The role requires strong foundations in software engineering principles, software lifecycle management, and cloud-based solutions, providing the ability to make architectural decisions across a wide range of contexts. While the position does not require expertise in every technology, it does require a solid understanding of the most relevant concepts, together with the curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to continuously learn and adopt new technologies as projects evolve. The role also requires strong collaboration with Arup's global Digital community, aligning local initiatives with global standards, platforms, and innovation strategies.

You will act as a technical reference point, helping to shape scalable, resilient, and future-proof digital solutions that support Arup's projects in areas such as Smart Cities, Digital Twins, infrastructure, and complex urban and industrial systems.

As a Senior Software Architect at Arup, you will:

  • Lead the architecture and design of digital solutions, defining scalable, secure, and resilient software architectures aligned with business and project objectives across urban, infrastructure, and industrial domains.
  • Design and oversee distributed and cloud-based systems, including data-driven architectures, microservices, real-time data processing pipelines, and hybrid cloud environments to support mission-critical applications.

  • Drive innovation through emerging technologies, such as Digital Twins, AI-driven solutions, industrial IoT, and data platforms, translating cutting-edge technology into practical, high-value outcomes for clients.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, guiding multidisciplinary teams, supporting capability development, and fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to bids and project proposals, providing architectural vision, technical strategy, and written input for national and European tenders, helping Arup secure and deliver complex digital engagements.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for a proactive, strategic, and technically strong professional who is motivated to develop their career within Arup's Digital practice. Ideally, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an Engineering or Science discipline, with a strong track record delivering complex software and digital projects.
  • Experience with cloud architectures and deployment, including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and hybrid environments, as well as containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD, and infrastructure as code.
  • Demonstrable experience in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, JavaScript, Java , C#, C/C++.
  • Strong background in web application and server architectures, including RESTful APIs, microservices, MVC patterns, and platforms such as Apache, Nginx, and IIS, with curiosity and experience in serverless approaches.
  • Proven experience working with relational and NoSQL data stores, such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, or similar technologies.
  • Solid understanding of source code management and collaborative development, using tools such as Git or SVN.
  • Desirable, but not mandatory, knowledge of geospatial technologies, such as GIS platforms, spatial data standards, geospatial APIs, or web mapping frameworks, particularly in the context of urban, infrastructure, or environmental projects.
  • Strong interest in Smart Cities, Digital Twins, data platforms, AI-driven solutions, or complex system integration is highly valued.
  • Fluent English and Spanish communication skills, with the ability to operate confidently in international, multidisciplinary environments.
