Part-Time Instructor: "Fútbol in Spain"

Position Description
NYU Madrid is seeking a local part-time instructor to teach the course "Fútbol in Spain." The course will run during the Fall and Spring semesters, beginning in Spring 2026 (January 19-May 12).
The course is taught in English. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.
Course Description
In this 2-credit course, students explore fútbol—soccer—in Spain not only as a sport, but as a cultural force with powerful social, economic, and political dimensions. Known the world over as "the beautiful game," fútbol in Spain takes many forms, including the hundreds of national, regional, municipal, and local clubs for both men and women, along with legions of loyal fans who follow them with devotion. We approach fútbol through the lens of cultural studies, asking why and how it matters—and to whom. We ask: why did fútbol become Spain's most popular sport, and how has its history intersected with dictatorship, democracy, and globalization? What do the finances of major clubs like Real Madrid and Barça reveal about capitalism, spectacle, and global branding? Why does fútbol consolidate a sense of national belonging in Spain and, at the same time, intensify regional rivalries? When does fútbol become political theater? How do lower-division teams with generational neighborhood histories become anchors of class and community identity? And what can we learn from the experiences of immigrant players from Africa or Latin America on Spanish teams? The course further considers how the rise of women's fútbol in Spain has redefined the cultural meaning of the sport, contrasting how men's fútbol has been tied to performances of masculinity, while women's fútbol has been a site of feminist visibility and struggle. Finally, we consider the question of fans, their rituals, and the sport's impact on everyday life. Alongside our readings and discussions, students will visit sites that bring these questions to life: these may include the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, a local neighborhood club, and the training complex of Real Madrid Femenino, among others.
Qualified candidates should hold a PhD or terminal degree in a related field. Experience as a student or teaching in a U.S. college or university is preferred. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.
