**About the role**

The goal of the position is to support and assist the passionate GVI Tenerife staff team in running our diverse and impactful Coastal Conservation Programmes, ensuring that our participants have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Role and responsibilities:

- Responsible for updating and managing the database outlined by the PM or Senior Coordinator/ Program Coordinator.
- Deliver workshops, presentations and assist with participant's training as directed by the Science Coordinator, PM or Senior Coordinator.
- Be pro-active with daily activities to ensure they are carried out as planned, such as daily, weekly and monthly scheduled tasks; scientific survey work; community and partner activities; any other activities as required by the Science Coordinator, PM or Senior Coordinator.
- Organise and lead field trips and activities with volunteers. This includes scientific survey work, community events, GVI-led recreational activities such as snorkels, or any other scheduled or ad-hoc activity.
- Assist with the training of volunteers for all activities on base and in the field and with their daily needs.
- Assist with creating and maintaining training resources such as presentations, flashcards, posters, etc.
- Assist with ensuring all data is recorded and entered accurately into the computer, and is stored and backed up securely.
- Assist with creating and organising data sheets for surveys as requested by the Science Coordinator, PM or Senior Coordinator.
- Assist with the training of new staff members in all aspects of the expedition.
- Assist in the maintenance and organisation of fieldwork equipment.
- Lead, organise and participate in fieldwork activities.
- Take a leadership role in specific research projects as appropriate, based on experience, abilities and team requirements.
- Assist the Programme Coordinator (Science) with reporting on research projects.
- Have a weekly meeting with the Science Coordinator where the coming weeks tasks and challenges will be discussed and assigned.
- Resolve minor volunteer issues in the field. If your are unable to resolve the issue inform the Science Coordinator, PM or Senior Coordinator who will then take next steps to resolve the issue.
- The Science Officer will have a lot of interactions with the volunteers and should aim to create a fun, safe and educational environment at all times.
- Assist with intakes and orientation.
- Should expect to be working in the field 4-5 days a week depending on the season and perform office duties the remainder of the week. Work week can include weekends when scheduled for intakes or base duties.

Professional skills and experience:

- Work experience in conservation and/or marine conservation, managing wildlife projects
- Experience with collecting, organising and recording project data.
- Proven data research report writing skills
- Project implementation and coordination skills
- Current First Aid qualification
- Awareness of conservation issues
- Proven experience and competence in administration and logistics
- Past volunteer or volunteer management work experience
- Past experience working in remote locations
- Teaching and leadership experience
