**Context And Mission**

The AC group develops and maintains its own forecast model MONARCH, which is a coupled meteorological-chemistry model that can be run at global and regional scales to simulate gaseous chemistry and aerosols plus their feedbacks on radiation. It provides operational air quality forecasts over Europe within the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Services (CAMS) and dust forecasts over Africa, Middle-East and Europe in the framework of the Barcelona Dust Regional Center (BDRC).

We are looking for an experienced researcher to coordinate the team on Atmospheric Chemistry and Air Quality (AC-CHEM) within the AC group. The AC-CHEM team aims to improve current understanding of atmospheric chemistry processes and support the improvement of AC modelling capabilities of the physical and chemical processes driving air quality and their impact on human health and ecosystems from regional to global scales, and to support policy and health impact assessment requirements. The AC-CHEM activities are fed by a strong and necessary interaction with other AC teams, as well as the Computational Earth Sciences group at BSC-ES.

**Key Duties**
- Definition of the strategy of the team together with the AC group leaders
- Coordination of daily activities of the team
- Advance understanding on the role of reactive species in the formation of tropospheric ozone and secondary particles
- Investigate the impact of emission sources on atmospheric chemistry under present and future climate conditions
- Advance process representation in AC modelling tools (e.g. MONARCH model)
- Contribute to the development of assessment tools such as source attribution
- Foster the integration of new technologies (e.g. AI) within AC tools
- Lead and participate in collaborative projects with partner institutions
- Conduct original research and dissemination in high impact peer reviewed publications, internal and external meetings and conferences

**Requirements**:

- Education
- Having a PhD in atmospheric chemistry, physics, environmental engineering or similar
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in atmospheric chemistry and air quality
- Experience in atmospheric modeling
- Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications
- Experience coordinating research projects and teams
- Good programming skills in Python or equivalent, experience with Unix/Linux and HPC environments
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Fluency in English is essential. Proficiency in Spanish and other European languages would be advantageous
- Experience in machine learning (5 years minimum) and experience with one or several Python machine learning libraries (Scikit-learn, Pytorch, Keras and/or Tensorflow)
- Experience with revision control systems (e.g., SVN or Git)
- Knowledge of atmospheric science data formats (GRIB, NetCDF)
- Competences
- Very good interpersonal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and within a team

**Conditions**
- The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
- We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
