- The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

- This position is hosted by the Climate Variability and Change (CVC) Group within BSC's Earth Science Department. The CVC Group undertakes fundamental research to (1) understand climate variability and change, including for climate extremes, (2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics, effectiveness and impacts of carbon removal technologies to mitigate climate change, (3) developing new Earth System modeling capabilities, and (4) improving our ability to forecast the climate variations from one month to multiple decades into the future, both at global and regional scales.

The funding for these actions/fellowships and contracts comes from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility - Next Generation, within the framework of the General Invitation by the public business entity Red.es to participate in the talent attraction and retention programs within Investment 4 of Component 19 of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.**Key Duties**
- Develop data-driven climate predictions
- Develop new data-driven tools to optimise the skill of climate predictions and projections through selecting subsets from large ensembles of simulations
- Use data-driven tools to infer and quantify relevant processes and sources of predictability
- Coordinate the CVC activities on AI-based climate prediction
- Supervise postdocs and students

**Requirements**:

- Education
- A PhD in Earth sciences, physics, atmospheric physics, fluid dynamics, meteorology, oceanography, mathematics or a related discipline
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Demonstrated experience in seasonal to decadal climate predictions
- Strong track record publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles
- Proven ability to publish manuscripts in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Demonstrated ability to obtain competitive research funding
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Fluency in English is essential. Proficiency in Spanish and other European languages would be advantageous.
- Good understanding of the physical climate system, climate variability and predictability
- Leadership and management experience coordinating complex projects.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration within a multidisciplinary team

- Ability to work in a team and in a multi-cultural environment.
- Good networking skills
- Ability to interact with climate and computer scientists to conduct collaborative research
