Greentech & Environtech "Wood Pellet Biomass (WPB) is a bulky solid energy source that uses significant storage space when used to heat buildings. It’s commonly stored in buildings’ basement floors where the space is precious or sometimes underground in old Domestic Fuel Oil (DFO) tanks. The measurement of the level of WPB in horizontal surfaces like tanks or especially dedicated rooms (not vertical silos) is rather complicated and not accurate. Existing solutions are scarce, expensive and suffer high installation costs. Biohome aims to develop an alternative “smart” measuring solution that will improve all these and include a quantity and quality monitoring system to detect problems before it affects the correct functioning of pellet boilers used for heating. The system will be completed with a digital platform to collect, treat and send all data to different user profiles and will include e-commerce capabilities for pellets replenishment. All data collected will be used by AI programs and IoT to be exploited in different areas. Customers will be pellets consumers like households or commerce, HVAC biomass boiler installers and WPB distributors, each having a specific profile on the digital platform. From the consumer perspective, using the Biohome solution will convert pellet consumption into a regular energy flow (as with gas or electricity) and convert his premises into a smart and clean energy building. So the scope of the research tackles two different areas of engineering: - A “smart metre” to measure pellets flow in terms of quantity (weight and KWh) and quality (humidity, dust, etc.). The technology is yet to be defined, however some of them have already been prioritised at this point. The aim is to get a precise and cheap measuring system to address the mass market of buildings; - An e-commerce enabled mobile platform for different user profiles. SEARCHED PROFILE The searched profile is an engineer aiming to get a masters or doctorate (PhD) degree that could develop part or all these engineering areas, in collaboration with tech universities and research centres in Catalonia, Spain and the rest of Europe, where she will use their installations and tools. She will sporadically join HVAC installers and other stakeholders to test developments in real construction sites, as well as professionals’ exhibitions and other research related spots within Europe. She needs to have a good level of languages. Good English is a must, Spanish/Catalan and German convenient, ideally based in Barcelona or surroundings, although a significant percentage of remote work is conceivable. Must have - Finished an Engineering Bachelor’s degree and pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical or Electronics Engineering, Math or related technical field - Good knowledge of AI/ML programming and most likely focusing on auto-encoders - Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages, including: Python, PHP or similar - Knowledge of UNIX/Linux is a benefit. - Ability to speak and write in English fluently - You are open, communicative personality and appreciate the cooperation with colleagues from different areas Bonus points - Knowledge of industrial engineering and sensors - Hands-on to build prototypes What we offer - The opportunity to work in a dynamic, vibrant international team - Personal development through continuous learning and feedback - A flat hierarchy working environment - Flexible working hours & partial remote work - Possibility of working part-time as part of a Master's/Doctorate degree ABOUT SMART BIOHOME We are a 21st century young startup with a very ambitious project aiming to disrupt the biomass market and lead this industry in Europe within a few years.
