Research Assistant

Our legal team is looking for a research assistant/analyst/consultant to join our well-established public policy practice and help us in the day-to-day implementation of legal studies, evaluation of legal instruments (Directive/ Regulation) and impact assessments for the European Commission, in particular DG Justice and Consumers, and its agencies (FRA, EIGE, Eurojust).

Our project portfolio reflects the diversity of policy areas covered by DG Justice, namely criminal law and procedure, civil law (contract law, company law and recognition of judgements between Member States), protection of fundamental rights, but also aspects related to freedom of movement and equality in general.

Here are just a few examples of our current and future assignments:
- Study on democracy and transparency of elections;- Study on artificial intelligence and new forms of contracts;- Study on the recognition of parental rights from one Member State to another;-
- Study on the protection of victims of crimes and set-up of a Centre for victims of terrorism;- Study on the fight against racism;- Study on diversity and inclusion at work;- a complete legal education (5 years of valid legal studies, preferably in an EU country);- a sound understanding of EU law and/or private international law.

What you will do:
You will play a key role in developing our portfolio and experience in the policy areas covered by DG Justice, including the dimension of judicial cooperation between Member States.

On a day-to-day basis, your main responsibilities will include:
- Research and data collection activities (through reading and analysing reports, supplemented by interviews with political and legal stakeholders);- Qualitative and quantitative analysis of data (experience with Excel is essential and SPSS, STATA is desirable);- Preparing and organising surveys and interviews with stakeholders;- Accompanying colleagues and managers to meetings with the Commission and/or partners;- Working closely with other project teams;- Contribute to the preparation of calls for tender with a view to obtaining new studies;

Summary of experience and skills required:
- Full qualification in law (5 years valid, preferably with civil law and/or EU or international law)- At least 1.5 years' professional experience in the legal or political field;- Ability to research and analyse (including case law at national level and at European level [ECHR, CJEU]);- Excellent written and oral communication skills (fluency in English and at least one other European language).- Highly developed interpersonal skills and self-motivation;- High attention to detail and accuracy;- Ability to be flexible in managing multiple priorities and a varied workload to meet deadlines without compromising quality or standards.
