Want to be part of the team building the finest property, casualty and specialty lines insurance company in the world?Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Construction Underwriter to join our Property team in Madrid.The Construction Underwriter will be responsible for developing and expanding new business opportunities, analyzing exposures according to BHSI's risk quality and confidence framework, negotiating fair insurance conditions and deploying necessary capacity for all type of construction projects, including civil works, buildings, power generation, oil & gas, mining, etc. A good understanding of engineering concepts, risk management capabilities and strong business acumen is necessary to achieve our team objective of being a reputable Construction team with an outperforming combined ratio.We are seeking an individual with a solid background in underwriting Construction business, who strives for excellence in every area from analyzing risks to delivering customer and broker service.You should be comfortable working closely with the Claims team, underwriters and Risk Control engineers from across the broader team. Good data and file management skills are required.In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help lead and further build a profitable book of business are of the upmost importance.The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience, while maintaining sound underwriting discipline.This position is a great fit for an Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities and underwriting knowledge with an experienced and well-regarded unit within a top global insurance company.Duties & Responsibilities:Underwrite and grow the Construction book of business profitably within the BHSI risk appetiteEstablish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationshipsUnderwrite Construction projects (EAR, CAR) while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentationEvaluate and underwrite risks related to civil works, construction, and large infrastructures and all types of industrial risks including emerging risks.Analyze technical documentation, reportsParticipate in the development of products and technical proposals.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitabilityContribute towards the further development of Construction underwriting at BHSI both in Spain and globallyCollaborate to develop and strengthen the Spanish branch operations beyond the regular underwriting activitiesQualifications, Skills and Experience:2+ years of underwriting experience in Construction (both project and annual policies), technical underwriting or industrial risks.Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quicklyExperience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscriptsExperience marketing to specialized brokersStrong collaboration and team building skillsStrong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experienceGood understanding of natural catastrophe peril modelling and pricing for multi-year construction policiesAnalytical mindset: approach problems in a logical, structured, and data-driven manner; being curious, asking questions, and seeking out the best data and analytical tools.A technical background in fields such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or related disciplines is highly valued.BHSI Offers:A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammatesA dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates and our other stakeholdersA purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team frameworkTo apply, please submit your CV with a cover letter outlining why this would be the perfect role for youNOTE: Compensation will be commensurate with experience. xqysrnh This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
