The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses Mare Nostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for Euro HPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission
We are looking for a junior developer to work in the Data-driven scientific computing group, which is part of the Workflows and Distributed Computing group. The goal of our research is to design resource management strategies for big data applications, defining policies that enable distributed data stores to meet high-level performance goals. We focus on scientific applications, like those from earth science domain, which data generation and accesses are both bounded by precision and performance.
In particular, this junior developer will work designing and implementing tools to support on-line and off-line analysis of data generated by Big Data scientific applications. Among other tasks, he/she will work on exploiting novel storage hierarchies, exploring solutions ranging from extending existing functionalities on non-relational databases to combine different data store solutions for each level in the hierarchy.
Key Duties
- Development of policies and mechanisms to manage data storage hierarchy
- Design and development of a common interface for non-relational databases that support both data persistency and data streaming
- Design and development of a environment to support both on-line and off-line data analytics
- Participation in the preparation of project deliverables
- Participation in dissemination tasks
Requirements
- Education
- Graduate on Computer Science
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Knowledge of distributed data systems for Big Data applications
- Programming with Python and C++
- Fluent use of Linux based systems
- Fluency in English is essential
- Knowledge of data streaming systems for Big Data applications
- Knowlegde of Apache Cassandra database
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience with application performance analysis and distributed programming models

Conditions
- The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
- We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
- Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
- Starting date: 1/1/2025
