Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Job Description:

This Senior Electrical Engineer position will fulfill an on-site role at Microsoft’s Helsinki, Finland datacenter campus supporting ongoing construction activities. This role will serve as a daily on-site presence to review progress and support quality design of multiple concurrent datacenter builds. The position will be responsible for monitoring progress for compliance with construction documents from initial stages through commissioning and work closely with the engineering, procurement, controls, and construction teams.

Additionally, this role will provide project management, technical direction, decision-making, and overall leadership on behalf of engineering throughout the construction lifecycle up to and including the turnover to Microsoft Datacenter Operations. As such, they will support multi-discipline coordination, issue identification and resolution, continuous improvement efforts, and the ongoing documentation of project learnings for incorporation into future designs.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  2. Experience in electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience specific to datacenter electrical engineering.
  3. Ability to review construction drawings, project specifications, and equipment submittals against construction activities to track progress and review potential issues.
  4. Strong experience with the design and operation of electrical systems, power distribution systems, backup power systems, electrical power monitoring systems, the control diagrams, sequence of operation for the electrical controls systems, overall network architecture, and communication protocols required.
  5. Possess a high level of understanding of commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.
  6. Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology, including the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and requirements documents is essential.
  7. Working knowledge of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
  8. Must possess strong leadership competencies and willingness to collaborate and work cross-functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences.
  9. Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of business up to and including business executives.
  10. Able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.
  11. Be a person of integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.
  12. Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  13. Candidate must have site-based experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Extensive experience in electrical or construction engineering for mission critical or high-tech industry projects.
  2. Registered Professional Electrical Engineer.
  3. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

  1. Serve as the on-site electrical engineering and project management representative throughout the construction of a multi-year datacenter campus development.
  2. Perform regular site walks and site inspections to observe progress, review construction vs design intent, review all benchmarking to ensure standard and quality are met, and flag potential concerns for engineering review.
  3. Close working relationship with all MSFT site personnel – attending construction-based quality and assurance meetings, attend schedule and milestone review sessions, close monitoring of Electrical and EPMS related risk items with the AE SMEs.
  4. Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.
  5. Support and oversight of submittal review, RFI responses, and commissioning activities.
  6. Facilitate timely response and enable seamless project execution.
