Overview Engineering Manager - Security Standards and Hardening role at Canonical. The role focuses on leading the security standards for open source software across the Ubuntu platform, including desktops, servers, edge devices, cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes and OpenStack. You will help certify core components to meet industry standards and guide development teams in security best practices, with emphasis on cryptographic modules (FIPS 140) and system hardening, collaborating with industry partners such as CIS and DISA. As an Engineering Manager, you will provide line management and career guidance, develop engineering talent, represent your team technically, and drive collaboration with other teams and customers to deliver secure software. What you will do in this role Lead and develop a team of engineers, from graduate to senior levels Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback Identify and measure team health indicators Implement disciplined engineering processes Represent the team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers Develop and evangelise engineering and organisational practices Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects Support products and customers to meet strict security requirements (FIPS, CIS, STIG, FedRAMP, CRA) Address cryptography modules (FIPS 140) and system hardening with industry partners (CIS, DISA) What we are looking for in you Strong academic track record; undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling alternative path Drive and a track record of exceeding expectations Excellent English communication skills (verbal and written) Love of developing people and a history of doing so Organised with ability to deliver high-quality results on time Professional interaction with colleagues, partners, and community Prior experience with FIPS/Common Criteria certified products and knowledge of underlying standards Experience with DISA-STIG or CIS benchmarks and audit/remediation tooling (e.g., Compliance as Code) Knowledgeable about software and application security Experience in an agile development environment Demonstrated commitment to continual learning Ability to build trust and relationships, and deliver on commitments Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip) Optional skills we value Hands-on domain knowledge of Linux cryptography libraries (OpenSSL, GnuTLS) What we offer you Distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints Personal learning and development budget Annual compensation review and performance-driven bonus Comprehensive benefits aligned to local needs Annual holiday leave; maternity and paternity leave Employee assistance programme Travel opportunities to meet colleagues Travel upgrades for long-haul company events About Canonical Canonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source.
