OverviewAs we strive to be Earth's Safest Place to Work, we are expanding the Japan Workplace Health and Safety organization and are seeking a Director, Safety Operations, Japan. This mission-driven role will directly impact thousands of employees by ensuring safe home-to-work and back daily, while leading the implementation of a comprehensive safety strategy to promote safe and efficient workplace practices for thousands of employees from first to last mile.The Director, Safety Operations, Japan determines the strategic direction for network programs, initiatives, and the resources required to deliver compliance assurance and life safety goals. This role also optimizes organization design to better serve operations and meet growth and corporate-wide initiatives. Given Japan's environmental challenges, this role is critical in developing and maintaining resilient safety protocols for natural disaster scenarios.ResponsibilitiesRun the organization autonomously and position it to deliver results today with grit and bias for action, while addressing risk and innovation opportunities.Apply technical knowledge in the WHS space to deliver beyond regulatory requirements, including the introduction and deployment of technology.Earn trust through outstanding performance, effective communication, and a strong record of timely and effective results.Demonstrate passion for problem solving and conceptualize novel applications using new and emerging technology.Lead global teams and collaborate across a matrixed organization as a strong leader of others.Develop Japan operational compliance and injury prevention strategies, plans, and objectives to achieve safety goals with total autonomy and discretion.Develop and innovate new methods for associate safety and injury prevention to improve life safety metrics (SIR, RIR, LTI) and drive safety culture.Assess effectiveness of deployed tools and revise practices for continual safety and environmental compliance improvement.Lead a large team of Sr. Managers, Safety Operations, delivering safety compliance assurance at all levels.Define and deliver all aspects of site-level safety organizational structure and talent management; recruit, staff, and develop site safety professionals.Drive consistent communication, training, and execution of safety programs across the network.Develop and maintain comprehensive natural disaster response protocols across all Japan facilities to ensure business continuity and employee safety.Basic QualificationsBilingual (Japanese/English) – critical for site communicationExperience managing a scale of organization/teamStrong leadership and influence across multiple teams, prioritizing safety.Willingness to travel 30-40% within JapanA Bachelor's degree or equivalent level of qualificationPreferred QualificationsKnowledge and experience of Japan operations/business environmentEnvironment, Health and Safety leadershipExperience implementing lean principles and process improvementsStrong analytical and statistical skills, including data analysisProject and program management in delivering key business outcomesExperience in multinational and complex corporate contextsInnovation/automation project leadershipAdvanced degree (Master's or MBA)Leadership CompetenciesDrives Change & Innovation: Proven track record of leading transformational initiatives with a builder mindset, comfortable navigating ambiguity in fast-paced environments.Influences Through Relationships: Builds strong partnerships across levels, especially with executive stakeholders, while operating with autonomy.People-Centric Leadership: Develops teams and prioritizes safety, with the ability to connect and inspire others.Data-Driven Decision Making: Uses analytics and systematic problem-solving while staying agile.Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers.
