Job Title Climate Services Team Leader (R3/R4) Job Details Location: Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) – Earth Sciences Department, Spain Type: Full‑time (37.5h/week) Contract: Open‑ended, technical and scientific activities linked to project and budget duration Salary: Competitive, commensurate with qualifications and cost of living in Barcelona Overview The Earth System Services (ESS) Group within the Earth Sciences Department at BSC focuses on researching how weather, atmospheric chemistry, and climate impact key socio‑economic sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, water management, forestry, and urban development. The Climate Services Team Leader will strategically develop climate prediction and projection‐based services for these sectors, working within the framework of WMO’s Global Framework for Climate Services. Key Duties Leadership: Lead the Climate Services team of the ESS Group, overseeing a team of approximately 19 researchers and fostering a collaborative, innovative research environment. Strategic Development: Define and refine the team’s research lines, aligning them with feasibility, budget constraints, ongoing project commitments, and emerging research opportunities. Research: Co‑lead research to develop context‑based solutions for generating climate information that informs decision‑making. Project Management: Ensure successful execution of national and EU‑funded projects, balancing current deliverables with a long‑term research vision. Collaboration & Network Building: Build and strengthen alliances within BSC and at national and international levels to enhance project opportunities and foster collaborations. Grant Writing: Apply for competitive grants and projects and participate in EU project work‑package management. Dissemination: Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at international conferences. Education and Qualifications Degree: Physics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics (or equivalent). Ph.D.: Atmospheric sciences, applied statistics, or related field. Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Strong background in climate data analysis and climate services. Leadership and mentoring skills for a multidisciplinary research team. Ability to align research objectives with funding opportunities and deliverables. Proven track record in securing and managing national and/or international research projects. Experience writing research proposals and developing project ideas. Understanding of project budgeting and resource allocation. Ability to establish and maintain partnerships at institutional, national, and international levels. Significant scientific publication record in the domain. Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Experience with sub‑seasonal, seasonal or decadal climate predictions and climate change projections. Experience with climate extreme indices or bioclimatic indicators. Experience developing tailored indicators for specific sectors (energy, agriculture, water management, forest fires). Experience managing multi‑disciplinary teams in an international research environment. Experience interacting with energy/agriculture/water management companies, NGOs and public administrations. Understanding of climate impacts on socio‑economic sectors such as energy, agriculture, food security, water management, disaster response, and infrastructure. Competences Problem‑solving, proactive, result‑oriented work attitude. Capability to work in an international and fast‑paced environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Conditions Full‑time contract (37.5h/week) with flexible working hours. Extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support for relocation procedures. Recruitment Process Curriculum Analysis: 40 points – evaluation of experience, scientific history, degree, training, and other relevant professional information. Interview Phase: 60 points – technical and administrative interviews assessing competencies, skills, and personal traits. Minimum 30 points out of 60 required for eligibility. The panel consists of at least three members with a minimum of 25% representation of women. Final decision communicated to all interview participants with feedback.
