Ubuntu Engineering Lead Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. We are hiring an engineering leader to drive quality, performance and resilience across four key Ubuntu teams. Overview As Ubuntu Engineering Lead you will own the technical roadmap, grow high‑performing engineering teams, and deliver robust, secure and high‑performance software for Ubuntu. You will work remotely with colleagues in every time zone and collaborate closely with product management, external stakeholders and the broader open source community. Responsibilities Lead and coach teams to deliver high‑quality, performant software in Rust, Go and Python. Design, develop and ship Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Foundations, and Debcrafters — maintaining foundational software, server distribution, desktop and archive health. Demonstrate sound engineering principles through architecture, development, code reviews and technical delivery. Plan, estimate, and execute engineering projects with product management to define vision and strategy for Ubuntu. Optimize the Ubuntu distribution for performance, reliability, and security. Contribute to upstream open source projects and neighboring community initiatives. Debug complex system‑level issues and deliver robust solutions. Author and improve technical and community documentation. Qualifications Exceptional academic track record and undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path. Ability to drive and deliver technical work streams going above and beyond expectations. Lead and coach others to deliver exceptional engineering work. Demonstrated passion for open source software. Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++. Professional written and spoken English. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Result‑oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments. Nice‑to‑have skills Experience contributing to or leading open source projects. Experience with Linux distributions/distribution engineering. Experience with software packaging and distribution mechanisms. Performance or Security Engineering experience.
