OverviewAntimicrobial Discovery Lab at Instituto de Química Física Blas Cabrera (IQF-CSIC) offers a 3‑year PhD position. The project is part of the international Open Source Antibiotics consortium, aimed at identifying inhibitors that target multiple enzymes essential for bacterial survival.Key ResponsibilitiesStudy Mur ligases (MurC, MurD, MurE, MurF) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other enzymes for inhibitor screening.Explore experimental conditions that favor homogeneous conformations and facilitate crystallisation in the presence of inhibitors.Generate crystallographic structures of Mur ligases in complex with relevant inhibitors for rational drug design.Periodically evaluate progress and potentially incorporate alternative projects as required.Optimize protocols, study protein–ligand interactions, and analyse resulting data, requiring intensive specialised work.Participate in a training programme covering basic biochemical techniques, protein expression and purification, crystallography, and biophysical, enzymological and computational methods.Prepare and present scientific results as part of a PhD thesis.Qualifications & RequirementsMaster’s degree in Biomolecules, Cellular Dynamics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.Strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, and protein science.Familiarity with bacterial protein expression and purification techniques.Basic knowledge of structural biology methods (crystallography, cryo‑EM).Ability to analyse scientific results and use computational tools for structural or biochemical studies.Capability to work independently and as part of an international, multidisciplinary team.Motivation to develop a doctoral thesis within the project framework.Good communication skills and strong proficiency in scientific English.Completion of a Master’s degree before the contract start date and formal admission to a PhD programme at a recognised Spanish university.Spanish residency (for selection through CSIC “bolsa de empleo” portal).Availability and commitment to undertake a full‑time PhD project for an estimated period of three years.Willingness to receive training in protein expression, purification, crystallography, and biophysical/enzymological techniques.Experience in studying Mur ligases and other enzymes involved in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis.Strong organisational skills, attention to detail for experimental work, data management, and documentation.Demonstrated critical, responsible, and ethical approach to scientific work.Submission of CV and motivation letter as part of the application.Excellent English; Spanish residency required.How to ApplyExpressions of interest should be accompanied by the applicant's CV and a motivation letter.
