Medical Director, Rare Disease

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Manager to lead our Rare Disease team in Spain. As a key member of our Medical Affairs team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing medical strategies to support our SMA portfolio.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute medical plans to support the SMA portfolio, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with global and regional strategies.
- Provide medical input into business planning processes, identifying key research questions and ensuring targeted solutions aligned with product strategy.
- Lead a team of medical professionals to ensure full alignment with global and regional strategies and support better understanding of current local challenges, clinical practice, and diagnosis needs for SMA patients.
- Partner with market access to demonstrate medical value of compounds in development to local stakeholders, including payers, HCPs, and agencies.
- Develop and execute phase IV studies, registries, IITs, and SRAs for SMA, as required.
- Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and provide strategic and operational input into SMA portfolio objectives.
- Support regulatory strategies for product-specific activities.
- Collaborate with commercial teams to create and drive medical product tactics that enhance SMA patient well-being and deliver value to patients and healthcare teams.
- Develop and manage budgets for SMA medical activities and provide input into affiliate budgeting and planning processes.
- Build local medical science expertise of the Biogen SMA portfolio.
- Facilitate sharing of best practices and knowledge across products and locations through training and internal knowledge sharing.
- Facilitate medical information request processes, patient support programs, patient advocacy groups, and caregiver advocacy groups, as appropriate.
- Manage an external medical expert network to ensure relevant and appropriate integration of accruing external medical expertise for Spain.
- Develop high-value continuous medical educational programs in SMA for external stakeholders.
- Coordinate medical review of country-specific SMA materials to ensure scientific accuracy and clearly express rationale for any objections before release.
- Provide medical perspective and knowledge to other SMA teams within the affiliate and at regional and global levels.
- Lead cross-functional product teams and collaborate with legal, quality, and compliance to ensure all regulations and contractual requirements are in place.
- Create a climate that fosters self-motivated individuals to aspire to higher levels of performance.
- Ensure exchange of medical information with other functions as appropriate for medical affairs and behave as a role model.
- Identify lifecycle development opportunities for SMA products based on patient needs.
- 3-5 years' experience in a medical affairs role in the pharmaceutical industry, with experience in Rare Disease/Neurology an asset.
- Ability to communicate and work in English/Spanish, with Portuguese language an asset.
- Knowledge and understanding of disease area, local healthcare system/market dynamics, regulations, policies, and SOPs, health economic techniques, and trends.
- Demonstrated strategic approach to implementation of scientific communication programs on disease areas and treatments.
- Leadership skills and acquired knowledge and skills/competencies to the degree expected at job level.
- 30-40% time in-field.
- Based in Madrid.
