Freight Cost Management & Material Oversight

OBJECTIVE

The Freight Cost Management & Material Oversight role is integral to the new GWT GBS team, concentrating on operational functions in two primary domains:

  • Financial Operations: This role will oversee financial responsibilities related to freight cost management, including execution, forecasting, and budgeting.
  • Thermal Equipment Coordination: The position entails managing the procurement process for thermal materials (such as dataloggers and thermal blankets) across Bayer sites and contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) globally, which includes budgeting, cost oversight, and the enhancement of operational processes.

In addition to daily operational tasks, the candidate is expected to contribute to process enhancements and potential projects that broaden the scope of responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Financial Management of Freight Costs: Responsible for tracking Internal Outward Freight (IOF) values, 4PL invoice amounts, and account entries. Ensure detailed shipment-level invoice content is verified and approved in Ariba. Review and authorize additional charges for exceptional cost management.
  • IOF Cost Management: Monitor and manage IOF expenses to meet monthly financial targets (annual budget approximately €180 million). Collaborate closely with 4PLs regarding cost developments. Calculate and communicate accruals to the finance team and support ad-hoc analyses.
  • IOF Cost Forecasting & Budgeting: Enhance the IOF projection model for budget calculations. Gather and develop necessary inputs from key stakeholders (price and volume projections). Facilitate budget and forecasting discussions with finance.
  • Airfreight Cost Oversight: Refine the airfreight budget projection model. Calculate the necessary airfreight budget to meet IOF targets. Manage the airfreight budget process, including monthly communications with GSM, quarterly steering meetings, and supporting the implementation of improvement initiatives. Assist with ad-hoc analyses.
  • Thermal Equipment Procurement:
    • Direct the ordering process for thermal equipment (primarily dataloggers and thermal blankets) for Bayer sites and CMOs.
    • Collaborate with GWT, Supply Chain, and Quality to develop process improvements.
    • Place Purchase Orders in alignment with Finance and GWT.
    • Track and monitor all orders operationally (CH division: approximately €1.5 million in costs, around 300 orders).
    • Conduct operational cost tracking of equipment by type and supplier, including transportation expenses.
    • Communicate effectively with Bayer sites, CMOs, supplier managers (Bayer), logistics service providers (external), and material suppliers (external).
    • Manage escalations in case of issues (e.g., delivery or transportation problems).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in business administration, logistics, supply chain management, industrial engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in logistics and supply chain, preferably with a focus on operations.
  • Experience in finance is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in advanced Excel functionalities and database applications.
  • Solid understanding of SAP business processes is preferred.
  • Good knowledge of Bayer's supply chain operations is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German is an advantage.
