Job Title: Lead 3D Character Artist

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead 3D Character Artist to join our team in Barcelona. As a Lead 3D Character Artist, you will be responsible for providing strong leadership and direction to a team of 3D Character Artists, creating high-quality characters and creatures, and delivering excellent translations of characters while considering game design constraints and artistic direction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of 3D Character Artists
  • Create high-quality characters and creatures
  • Deliver excellent translations of characters while considering game design constraints and artistic direction
  • Work closely with the Art Director to ensure the visual target is always exceeded and stylistically consistent
  • Provide creative and technical direction to character artists
  • Actively participate in technical and aesthetic problem-solving discussions for the entire project
  • Coordinate with tools and technology teams to develop necessary solutions for creating the best characters possible
  • Review assets to make certain that they satisfy their intended design and are ready for rigging and animation
  • Collaborate with other disciplines such as Design, Concept Art, Animation, Tech Art, and VFX to ensure that characters are fully realized
  • Verify the quality of assets in the game, and make improvements where necessary to fit technical constraints, performance targets, and artistic direction
  • Supervise bug distribution and verify bug fixes
  • Create and maintain a transparent and reliable schedule that is well-coordinated with production
  • Ensure the timely completion of assets on style and at the desired quality bar
  • Mentor 3D Character Artists by providing creative and technical training, guidance, and feedback
  • Document and communicate workflow and best practices to support consistency across the Character Art Team

Requirements:

  • High-quality portfolio of gamedev-relevant 3D Character Art, preferably with an emphasis on stylization
  • Able to interpret and follow concepts and reference material to create clean, detailed, and accurate 3D Character models
  • An excellent understanding of game mechanics related to characters, objects, and environments
  • Understanding of technical constraints for cross-platform production
  • Experience integrating 3D assets into industry-leading game engines such as Unity or Unreal
  • Experience with Marmoset Toolbag and 3D-Coat
  • High proficiency in modeling programs such as 3DSMAX, Maya, Blender, Zbrush, and texture/material authoring tools such as Photoshop and Substance
  • Excellent high and low poly modeling skills, as well as demonstrable skill with texture and shader creation within a PBR pipeline
  • Attention to detail for both aesthetic and technical quality
  • Deep knowledge of human and animal anatomy
  • Mastery of form, shape, structure, and silhouette in regard to modeling
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively coordinate with every department of a game development team
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a focus on results and driving projects forward
  • Know when to delegate or do it yourself using your production knowledge
  • Strong organizational, supervisory, and mentoring skills
  • Commitment to the project and a desire to find the best possible way of inspiring others
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Educated on the latest trends and have a strong perspective on how they relate to our current and future projects
