About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Database Systems Engineer to join our team at The Workshop. As a key member of our database team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our database platforms to ensure they remain online, secure, and optimized for performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer database platforms to ensure they remain online, secure, and right-sized.
  • Support blockchain payments and analytics-based systems built on MongoDB, Cassandra, and Elasticsearch hosted in both public and private clouds.
  • Manage databases across multiple data centers and cloud environments, automating routine tasks like patching and configuration management.
  • Support our development lifecycle through feasibility, design, and delivery to ensure solutions are automated, robust, scalable, maintainable, and secure.
  • Promote and collaborate in the creation of solutions to drive automation, environment consistency, and continuous delivery with an "everything as code" mentality.
  • Lead on complex database tasks such as Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), very large table modifications, advanced query tuning, and data migrations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, application development teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Cross-train peers in database development and administration.
  • Provide out-of-hours production support as part of a 24/7 rota.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years' experience working as a Database Engineer supporting MongoDB and/or Cassandra in a production environment.
  • Public cloud experience using OpenStack, GCP, or AWS.
  • DevOps/automation-first mindset with experience using deployments with Ansible or similar automation tools for config/admin.
  • Practical experience of the following using scripting languages or programming frameworks (Python, Bash, Java, etc.).
  • System administration and tuning of Linux-based servers.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using code versioning tools like Git.
  • Experience configuring and using CI/CD tools (AWX/Gitlab/ArgoCD).
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) concepts.
  • Experience supporting data warehousing (ODS/OLAP) technologies like Clickhouse, GCP BigQuery, or DuckDB is desirable but not a pre-requisite.
  • Willingness to work as part of a 24/7 on-call rota.
  • Team player mindset with ability to work autonomously in a dynamic environment and willing to take multiple initiatives forward at the same time.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
