Job DescriptionAbout the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Policy Officer to join our team at Sin nombre. As a Policy Officer, you will play a critical role in supporting the Governor and the Director of Strategy in developing and implementing policy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission of Inquiry (50%):
- Lead on the Governor's Office oversight and implementation of Commission of Inquiry recommendations.
- Support the Governor and Strategy Director in developing UK policy and handling COI implementation, proactively analyse and carry out in-depth fact finding to understand barriers to implementation and use sound judgement to identify the best approach or solution to a problem and presenting these clearly and effectively to a range of stakeholders.
- Ensure recommendations that fall under the Governor are delivered in a timely manner planning ahead to ensure recommendations are delivered on time and using appropriate judgement to take decisions when suitable, or escalating to others as appropriate.
- Track progress of delivery and provide regular updates to the Governor and wider stakeholders as required.
- Produce and maintain regular programme reporting documents for the Governor of all COI recommendations working closely with staff in the Governor's Office and BVI Government.
- Build strong relationships with Government of the Virgin Islands staff.
- Proactively identify any delays or risks to delivery in a timely manner and take appropriate actions when suitable, or escalating to the Director of Strategy and Governor as required.
- Support the delivery of law enforcement and justice recommendations working closely with law enforcement and justice policy lead and BVI Government.
- Communications (20%):
- Develop and own a strategic communications plan for the Commission of Inquiry working closely with other office staff to ensure all communications is integrated and joined-up with other communications.
- Develop and contribute to the Governor's Office wider communications strategy.
- Handle media queries and develop relationships with journalists in the Territory.
- Deliver timely and effective communications on the Commission of Inquiry identifying opportunities to disseminate key messages through the Governor being responsible for effective communication with the public.
- Support wider Government Office communications using social media and traditional media to highlight and promote the work of the Governor and Governor's Office.
- Lead on monitoring and measurement of communications activity and be responsible for continuously improving the communications strategy based on the evaluation communications activity.
- Policy Support (20%):
- Support the policy leads in developing and implementing Governor's Office policy areas, this includes law enforcement, security and sanctions among others.
- Crisis Planning and Preparation (5%):
- Support crisis planning and preparation as required, leading on a crisis role for the office and contributing to wider contingency planning.
- Administrative and Corporate (5%):
- Draft speaking notes, speeches, social media on policy areas.
- Support or lead on any other ad-hoc issues required of a small post.
- Take on corporate roles and responsibilities.
Requirements
- Proven skills in delivering results under pressure, excellent organisational ability and a proactive results-driven approach to problem solving.
- Good oral and written communication skills with excellent standards of written and spoken English.
- Reliable, capable under pressure and able to complete multiple tasks and high volume of work on deadline.
- Strong ability to work both as part of a team and with considerable autonomy.
- Experience of dealing with stakeholders of all levels - strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to analyse problems rapidly and work on his/her own initiative.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Time management skills.
- A team player who is supportive to colleagues at all times.
- Flexibility, patience, and ability to deal with difficult situations, including working unsocial hours in an emergency or crisis.
