The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is dedicated to conducting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research aimed at maximizing the societal benefits of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition, and weather forecasting. The group is committed to engaging with various stakeholders, including society, decision-makers, and businesses, to facilitate knowledge exchange and develop user-focused services. The primary goal of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology transfer while improving resilience in the face of a rapidly changing environment.
The ESS group is seeking a social scientist from any nationality to design, assess, and refine knowledge co-production processes. The successful candidate will participate in knowledge transfer activities across various EU-funded projects, collaborating closely with climate scientists, impact researchers, and communication specialists, as well as with both potential and established users of climate information. The role involves building trust within target stakeholder groups, understanding their climate information needs and expectations, and ultimately enabling effective knowledge co-production processes. By applying social science methodologies, the candidate will propose innovative approaches to integrate user knowledge into climate services research, thereby enhancing the transdisciplinary nature of the Earth Sciences Department.
The ideal candidate is expected to engage with ongoing scientific activities within the ESS group and conduct stakeholder engagement initiatives at an international level. Experience in interdisciplinary and international teams, a proven track record in organizing stakeholder engagement activities, and a solid understanding of participatory science are essential for this position.
The selected candidate will join a diverse and international team of scientists, communication experts, and technical professionals. They will benefit from expert training and the various advantages offered by BSC-CNS, including a stimulating international multidisciplinary scientific environment and advanced applied research training.
Key Duties
- Implement participatory methods to foster user engagement and support citizen science and decision-making processes.
- Execute user-engagement tasks within EU-funded projects such as AGORA and nextGEMS.
- Produce reports and papers on stakeholder engagement, the impact of climate information on decision-making, knowledge co-production, and transdisciplinary aspects of climate services research.
- Coordinate with other projects and initiatives to organize user-engagement activities at international conferences and events, linking with academic partners from social sciences for collaborative studies.
- Address stakeholders' feedback and needs identified in meetings and workshops, facilitating knowledge transfer to and from stakeholders.
- Education
- A PhD in Social Sciences, Human Geography, or a related field, demonstrating knowledge of social science theories and methodologies.
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Over two years of experience in knowledge co-production and engagement with stakeholders and policymakers.
- Prior work related to climate change adaptation.
- Experience in writing research project proposals.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in science-policy dialogue and citizen science is highly valued.
- Professional experience with European institutions or international organizations is advantageous.

- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.

Conditions
- The position will be based at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
- We offer a full-time contract in a conducive working environment, featuring state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, an extensive training plan, restaurant vouchers, private health insurance, and support for relocation procedures.
- Duration: Open-ended contract linked to technical and scientific activities associated with the project and budget duration.
