Data Engineering Innovator for Azure Synapse Analytics

The Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the data-driven world with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Our portfolio includes Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI.
We are building the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture. As part of this journey, we are seeking an experienced Data Engineering Innovator to join our Gray Systems Lab (GSL), an applied research group within the Azure Data CTO office.
GSL tackles interesting challenges in open-source and proprietary technologies related to analytics, cloud, AI, and storage systems. We build reliable, highly scalable, and high-performance distributed systems for data analytics on Azure, publish research in top conferences, and contribute to open-source projects. Our researchers and engineers have published hundreds of academic papers and developed technologies that have impacted tens of millions of dollars in Microsoft revenues/costs.
In this role, you will establish collaborative relationships with relevant product and business groups inside or outside of Microsoft, providing expertise or technology to create business impact. You will take initiative and drive activities such as technology transfers, standards organizations, patent filings, authoring white papers, developing or maintaining tools/services for internal use, or consulting for product or business groups.
You will bring new technology and approaches into production by applying long-term research efforts to solve immediate product needs. You will collaborate with development teams, bridge the gap between researchers and developers, and negotiate across teams to ensure cutting-edge technology is applied to products in a practical way that meets key business objectives.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Evaluating and applying research-backed solutions to positively impact Microsoft products or services;
- Designing approaches to solve significant business problems shared by senior team members;
- Providing strategic direction for the kinds of data used to solve problems;
- Reviewing business and product requirements and incorporating state-of-the-art research or previously tested solutions to formulate plans that meet business goals;
- Fostering audiences for products based on understanding of industry trends and advances in applied technologies.
This is an exceptional opportunity to work on novel technologies including analytics on GPUs, container technologies, graph databases, infrastructure and models for LLMs and data-science, machine learning for systems, and many other areas.
