About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join our team at Scopely. As a key member of our development team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs in Python running on AWS.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design and Implement Backend Services: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new features in our core technologies, ensuring the best technical solutions and planning the future of our server core technologies.
  2. Server Performance Optimization: Inspect the performance of our server clusters and propose improvements to ensure high availability and scalability.
  3. Security and Hardening: Conduct deep analysis of player behaviors and implement measures to harden our servers against bad actors, improving player experience and security.
  4. Collaboration and Deployment: Work closely with the QA team to resolve bugs, deliver high-quality code, and deploy, monitor, and manage applications in a cloud environment such as AWS.
  5. Staying Up-to-Date: Stay current with industry changes and emerging trends, particularly regarding Python, Redis, and AWS.
Requirements
  1. Professional Experience: Highly experienced in a professional development team or relevant area.
  2. Backend Systems Expertise: Experience in developing highly available back-end systems and servers for large-scale MMO games, high-traffic web systems, or applications.
  3. Technical Skills: Proficient in Python and its ecosystem, including web frameworks such as Flask, Tornado, or FastAPI, and principles of async programming.
  4. Redis and Linux Expertise: Familiarity with design and implementation of highly scalable, reliable, and secure systems using Redis and its ecosystem.
  5. API Design and Development: Solid understanding of RESTful API design and development, with the ability to write efficient, low-latency, and low-IO code.
  6. Operating Systems and Containers: Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and Docker containers, as well as Redis, MySQL, or similar database systems.
  7. Security and Testing: Good understanding of how to prevent intrusions, injections, cheating, and experience with version control, deployment methodologies, and CI/CD pipelines.
  8. Game Server Architectures: Experience with stateful and stateless game server architectures.
Bonus Points
  1. Messaging Systems: Familiarity with messaging systems such as RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, or Redis Streams.
  2. AWS Services: Experience working with AWS services like EC2, ECR, RDS, S3, and IAM.
  3. Infrastructure-as-Code: Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and experience with Terraform for managing infrastructure deployment.
  4. Network Infrastructure: Understanding of network infrastructure and cloud networking concepts, such as VPC, Subnet, Security Groups, and Load Balancing.
  5. Traffic Analysis: Experience with traffic analysis via Charles proxy, browser developer tools, Datadog, and logs.
  6. Log Querying and Dashboards: Understanding of Kibana/Datadog log querying and dashboards.
