The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a leading international research organization in the life sciences. Our Barcelona site is a state-of-the-art research facility located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, a hub for translational research in Southern Europe.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position will be part of the project 'A novel Maternal-Fetal-Interface on-Chip for Human Investigation of Placental exposures and infections (MFI-CHIP)', funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIU) and the European Social Fund (ESF+).
Job SummaryWe are seeking an extremely motivated and talented researcher to join our team as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The successful candidate will work on developing a novel 3D vascularized maternal-fetal interface to represent late-stage placental barrier, and investigate the impact of sex differences, hormones, and exposures on transport across this critical barrier.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and optimize 3D culture of an in vitro maternal-fetal interface on-chip
- Employ the model and associated assays and analysis techniques
- Collaborate with local clinical researchers to isolate primary-derived trophoblast cells from explanted placenta for incorporation and optimization on-chip
- Explore a range of questions related to sex differences, exposures, and infection using the optimized model
- Contribute to the development of a collaborative project with the Bernabeu group at EMBL Barcelona to explore malaria infection in the placenta model
- PhD in biology, bioengineering or related fields, preferably with experience in 3D cell culture
- Extensive experience working with primary-derived human cells
- Strong practical skills in cell culture and molecular biology techniques
- 3D tissue culture experience
- Advanced microscopy and quantitative imaging skills
- Experience with bulk RNAseq analysis
- Independent and motivated work habits
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Strong interest in the maternal-fetal interface and its dysfunction in humans
- Knowledge of vascular and/or placental biology
- Experience with cell isolation techniques from explant tissue (placenta)
- Hands-on experience with microfluidics and microfabrication techniques (3D printing, working with PDMS devices)
- Experience in advanced image analysis or computational skills (ImageJ, Python)
