Overview of Quantum Technologies
The Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond possess electron spin that can be optically manipulated, making them leading candidates for solid-state applications in quantum information, computation, and metrology. The rapid advancement of technologies focused on precise control of quantum properties is set to revolutionize our society through groundbreaking quantum innovations and novel applications. This project holds significant potential, as the selected candidate will engage in research and development activities. Throughout this PhD program, the candidate will gain extensive expertise in quantum technology, optics, photonics, CMOS technology, nano-fabrication, and multiphysics simulation.
The ideal candidate should possess a background in Experimental Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline, with experience in condensed matter physics, optics, photonics, and/or microelectronics. Familiarity with electronics and programming is advantageous. The candidate must be physically capable of working in a laboratory setting. Strong communication and teamwork abilities are essential.
Main Responsibilities
- Enhancement of a quantum diamond microscope (QDM).
- Characterization of magnetic sensing/imaging through continuous wave (CW) and pulsed Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance (ODMR) techniques, along with sensitivity optimization.
- Design and execution of NV-CMOS integrated quantum sensors, including the design and modeling of on-chip initialization and readout for ODMR.
- Presentation of scientific findings at international conferences, along with the preparation of technical documentation and scientific publications.
- Composition of a PhD thesis based on research outcomes.
Work Environment
The candidate will collaborate within a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers at Gradiant, with opportunities for research stays at prestigious university groups specializing in Quantum Photonics, facilitating the completion of a PhD project to attain a Doctorate degree.
Gradiant provides exceptional quantum optics laboratory facilities, equipped with a diverse range of instruments, supported by a highly skilled team of physicists and engineers, along with access to all necessary design and simulation software.
Candidate Profile
- MSc degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electronics, or related fields.
- Strong motivation and interest in developing innovative integrated quantum technologies utilizing point defects in diamond for real-world applications.
- Solid understanding of condensed matter physics; prior experience in quantum sensing, integrated photonics, and/or CMOS technology is a plus.
- Laboratory experience with optical systems is desirable.
- High level of commitment and ability to work independently.
- Willingness to collaborate closely with a team of quantum physicists and engineers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong team-oriented mindset.
- Proficient in written and spoken English.
