Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Engineer or Scientist to join our team at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in the Earth Sciences Department. The successful candidate will assist in the development of high-resolution global climate simulations using the IFS/NEMO climate model.

Key Responsibilities
  • Modify and test model features to ensure the IFS-NEMO-SI3 model produces physically sound climate simulations.
  • Collaborate with department members to test model and workflow developments, debug potential errors, and optimize experiment efficiency.
  • Conduct and evaluate numerical simulations for model tuning and spin-up.
  • Contribute to the production of final Destination Earth and EERIE experiments and their assessment from a physical perspective.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in computer sciences, applied mathematics, or physics, or a related discipline. A PhD and work experience in meteorology/oceanography are considered assets.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience: Advanced knowledge of high-level computer languages (especially FORTRAN), UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python), and debugging tools. Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere, and other Earth system components. Familiarity with HPC architectures and parallel programming is valued. Experience with version control systems (SVN or Git) is also valued.
  • Competences: Reliable and constructive interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to take initiatives, prioritize, and work under set deadlines, ability to work independently and within a team, and fluency in English.
Working Conditions
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.

  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.

  • Salary: A competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
  • Starting date: ASAP.
