Postdoctoral Researcher in Data-Driven Health Solutions for Pigs

IRTA is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in Data Science to join the Animal Health Program.

The candidate will work on the project "Data-driven control and prioritisation of non-EU-regulated contagious animal diseases (DECIDE)" funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

We invite applications from ambitious candidates with relevant research experience and passion to conduct research and innovation activities on the development of data-driven decision support tools to improve health and welfare management of pigs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to high-impact projects in data science/epidemiology in collaboration with the group of endemic virus diseases, epidemiology, and animal welfare.
  • Retrieve laboratory, production, and animal health and welfare data by conducting laboratory work and under field farming conditions to develop a long-lasting professional interaction with farmers, integrators, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct research work with biological samples from animals naturally infected with endemic pathogenic viral and bacterial agents, and participate in lab and statistical analyses.
  • Execute scientific and technical tasks and take part in the planning and execution of the planned studies to ensure the achievement of milestones of research projects and contracts.
  • Supervise technical personnel and students supporting the research project.
  • Perform literature review, data collection, and management, involving statistical analysis.
  • Collaborate in positioning the Program as a group of excellence through regular peer-reviewed publications, contributions at national and international congresses.
  • Collaborate in fundraising activities through the preparation and submission of project proposals for public competitive calls and for contracts with the private sector, as well as reporting processes, such as writing progress and final reports of research activities.
  • Contribute to the teamwork and team spirit in the research line and in the Animal Health Program, fostering collaboration and integration activities.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Health Science and/or Data Science, specifically in Veterinary and/or Animal Health and/or Epidemiology, Biomedical or Biotechnological sciences, or (Bio)Statics.
  • Candidates with a proven set date for their PhD defense are also welcome.
  • Knowledge on epidemiological data analysis.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Strong motivation to work with different types of data in an applied scientific scenario.
  • Knowledge on endemic pig diseases.
  • Programming (R and Python) and statistical data analysis skills.
  • Knowledge on Machine Learning tools.
  • Experience in supervising BSc and MSc students.
  • Proven experience in public and private funding.

Languages:

Proficiency in English. Spanish and Catalan languages are valued.
