Position Overview
The Institut de Ciències del Mar (CSIC) is excited to announce a fully-funded PhD opportunity focused on eco-evolutionary modelling. This position invites passionate individuals to delve into the intricate history of life on Earth and explore the factors that have influenced the biodiversity we observe today.
About the Project
As part of the INDICiOS project, the successful candidate will engage in groundbreaking research aimed at transforming our comprehension of marine biodiversity. Building on the innovative INDITEK model, this project will utilize advanced reconstructions of Earth's paleogeography and simulations of oceanic environmental conditions to trace the evolution of marine invertebrate diversity over extensive geological timescales.
Through the integration of high-resolution paleogeographic data, detailed ocean environmental simulations, and sophisticated eco-evolutionary modelling techniques, INDICiOS aims to produce a comprehensive history of the marine latitudinal biodiversity gradient and its hotspots. This pioneering approach will shed light on how geological and evolutionary processes have shaped oceanic life, offering critical insights for future conservation strategies.
Key Responsibilities
- Enhancing existing eco-evolutionary models by incorporating rates of speciation and extinction, alongside implementing Bayesian calibration methods.
- Reconstructing the diversification history of marine invertebrates, mapping the rise, evolution, and decline of biodiversity hotspots.
- Evaluating hypotheses regarding the mechanisms driving the origins and dynamics of the latitudinal biodiversity gradient and associated hotspots.
- Contributing to scientific publications, presentations, and the development of a web application to visualize and disseminate project findings.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications
- A Master's degree (completed or in progress) in mathematics, physics, biology, marine sciences, or related fields.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Matlab, or Python is advantageous.
Language Proficiency
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required.
What We Offer
The successful candidate will receive a four-year contract to pursue their PhD, with an estimated annual gross salary ranging from €20,000 to €25,000, in accordance with CSIC pay scales. This full-time position offers flexible working hours and the option for remote work up to three days a week.
