Overview and Objectives
The Language Technologies Unit at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) boasts extensive expertise in various Natural Language Processing (NLP) domains, including the development of large-scale language models, biomedical text analysis, machine translation, and unsupervised learning tailored for under-resourced languages and fields. This unit has been appointed by governmental bodies to create essential open-source tools and technologies for both Spanish and Catalan languages. Currently, the LT Unit is spearheading two major initiatives: the National Language Technology Plan for Spanish, supported by the Spanish Secretariat of Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, and the AINA project, which focuses on generating AI resources for Catalan, backed by the Catalan Digitalisation Department. Additionally, the unit is involved in several international projects funded by the European Union.
The LT Unit is in search of a Machine Learning Engineer/Developer with a solid background in Language Technologies, particularly in deploying Machine Learning and Large Language Models, to aid in the widespread integration of advanced AI technologies for Iberian languages.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute proof-of-concept NLP applications utilizing LLMs and various AI resources.
  • Prepare for model training and fine-tuning on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Curate datasets for training and benchmarking to assess application performance.
  • Assess the quality of models and datasets.
  • Document and share models on open-access platforms.
Qualifications
  • Educational Background
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Applied Linguistics, or related fields.
    • A Master’s degree is considered an asset.
  • Required Skills and Experience
    • A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in deep learning or ML frameworks relevant to the field.
    • Proven experience in coding NLP applications using Python and other programming languages.
    • Familiarity with version control systems and best practices.
    • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Skills and Experience
    • Experience in developing open-source software and resources.
    • Background in working within dynamic ML teams.
    • Proficient in spoken and written Catalan and/or Spanish.
    • Strong grasp of linguistic principles.
    • Knowledge of libraries such as Spacy, Gensim, Gradio, Huggingface, Pytorch, and other NLP, UI, and ML tools.
  • Competencies
    • Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to perform under time constraints.

Employment Conditions
  • The position is based at BSC within the Life Sciences Department.
