Overview

We are seeking multiple Lead Software Developers to enhance our team within the Azure Data engineering division.

The Azure Data engineering division is at the forefront of transforming analytics through various products, including database solutions, data integration, big data analytics, messaging systems, and business intelligence tools. Our portfolio features Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our goal is to create a data platform suited for the AI era, enabling a new generation of data-driven applications and fostering a data-centric culture.

Within Azure Data, the big data analytics team offers a suite of products that empower data engineers and scientists to derive insights from diverse data types—structured, semi-structured, and unstructured. We are currently integrating our various products into Azure Synapse Analytics, aiming to streamline and expedite the time to value.

We are looking for engineers to spearhead the development of essential components for the Cloud Data Warehouse that supports SQL analytics in Azure compute. Your work will involve query optimization, transactional storage, and distributed query processing to create a flexible and scalable cloud data warehouse capable of handling Tier 1 enterprise workloads in Azure Data Lake. We seek enthusiastic individuals with experience in high-throughput, multi-tenant services, who can design components meticulously, manage errors effectively, and produce clean, maintainable code with comprehensive testing.

As a Lead Software Developer in the Big Data Analytics team, you will contribute to the cloud infrastructure and large-scale distributed platform services that enhance the Spark experience in Microsoft Fabric and Azure Synapse Analytics, while also aiding in the evolution of Microsoft's Cosmos big data platform.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant experience in software design, development, and architecture.
  • Proven experience in creating robust, scalable solutions using C#/C++/C or other object-oriented programming languages.

Other Requirements

Candidates must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements for this role, which may include specialized security screenings such as the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.

  • This position requires passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in developing cloud-based online services or extensive familiarity with cloud services.
  • Background in Distributed Big Data systems is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with modern infrastructure development practices such as Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, DevOps, or platform engineering.
  • Preferred experience with Kubernetes and/or Azure Service Fabric.
  • Preferred experience in Win32 Networking programming within distributed systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the development of features from inception to widespread customer adoption.
  • Creating software specifications, proof-of-concepts, and prototype solutions based on high-level feature requirements.
  • Utilizing data and telemetry to enhance feature development and propose improvements to existing products.
  • As a senior engineer, you will have the opportunity to refine your design skills and grow as a technical leader, mentoring new hires.
  • Collaborating closely with program and product managers to prioritize customer needs effectively.
  • Enhancing and monitoring telemetry to evaluate product health in both pre-release and released software, using this data to drive quality improvements.
