Role Overview

As a Senior R&D Packaging Engineer, you will join the Old El Paso and Green Giant R&D Application Team within the Europe & Australia business segment. This team is dedicated to fostering consumer-centric innovation, holistic margin management (HMM), and core growth strategies for the Old El Paso and Green Giant brands. Your primary responsibility will be to spearhead packaging development initiatives across innovation, core product renovations, sustainability efforts, and margin management, ensuring our business thrives in the competitive marketplace.

In this position, you will utilize your technical expertise, influence, and project management capabilities while collaborating with cross-functional teams and both internal and external partners to identify, create, and implement packaging solutions for new and existing products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop innovation, HMM, and core growth strategies for OEP and GG in collaboration with key cross-functional partners.
  • Serve as the packaging team leader for the OEP team, providing technical guidance and managing resources effectively.
  • Oversee and coordinate multiple projects: design and execute technical plans, conduct risk assessments, create prototypes, manage timelines, and ensure clear communication and documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with the factory team to organize and execute industrial trials, producing comprehensive trial reports and communicating findings.
  • Maintain and update packaging technical specifications regularly.
  • Cultivate strong relationships and work collaboratively with various stakeholders across R&D, Marketing, Sourcing, Supply Chain, and External Partners to deliver effective packaging solutions.
  • Keep business partners informed about project progress, risks, and changes, influencing decisions based on a thorough understanding of consumer needs, technical aspects, and business objectives.
  • Proactively lead collaboration with cross-functional partners to establish robust packaging pipelines focused on innovation, renovation, sustainability, and margin management, aligned with consumer demands and business strategies.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with internal and external networks (e.g., suppliers, packaging institutions, start-ups, external packaging organizations) to broaden perspectives, identify opportunities, leverage capabilities, and effectively influence and gain support for initiatives.
  • Stay informed about advancements in packaging technology, regulatory changes, and competitive packaging activities to enhance awareness and make informed decisions.
  • Nurture connections within General Mills' global packaging community to share knowledge, address technical challenges, and align on the execution of corporate packaging initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in packaging, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience in packaging roles.
  • Proven ability to lead new packaging ideation, development, and commercialization while interfacing with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of product, packaging, and equipment interactions, with the capability to apply scientific and engineering principles to deliver innovative packaging solutions.
  • Familiarity with quality and regulatory considerations and practices.
  • Preferred experience in structural packaging and creative design.
  • Project management expertise.
  • Consumer-first mindset; experience applying design thinking methodologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong judgment, effective experimentation, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
