The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is dedicated to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research aimed at maximizing the societal benefits of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition, and weather forecasting. This group actively collaborates with various stakeholders, including society, decision-makers, and businesses, to facilitate knowledge exchange and develop user-centric services. The primary goal of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology transfer while bolstering resilience in the face of a rapidly evolving environment.
The ESS team is seeking a social scientist of any nationality to design, assess, and refine processes for knowledge co-production. The selected candidate will engage in knowledge transfer activities across multiple EU-funded initiatives. Close collaboration with climate scientists, impact researchers, and communication specialists, as well as with both potential and established users of climate information, will be essential. The role focuses on fostering trust within targeted stakeholder groups, comprehending their climate information needs, and enabling effective knowledge co-production processes. By employing social science methodologies, the successful candidate will propose innovative approaches to integrate user knowledge into climate services research, thereby enhancing the transdisciplinary nature of the Earth Sciences Department.
The candidate is expected to familiarize themselves with ongoing scientific endeavors within the ESS group and participate in international stakeholder engagement activities. Experience in interdisciplinary and international teams, a proven track record in organizing stakeholder engagement initiatives, and a solid understanding of participatory science are critical for this role.
The successful applicant will join a diverse and international team of scientists, communication experts, and technical professionals. They will benefit from specialized training and the advantages associated with being part of the BSC-CNS staff, including an international multidisciplinary scientific environment and advanced applied research training.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement participatory methods to foster user engagement and support citizen science and decision-making processes.
- Execute user-engagement tasks within EU-funded projects such as AGORA and nextGEMS.
- Produce reports and academic papers addressing stakeholder engagement, the impact of climate information on decision-making, knowledge co-production, and transdisciplinary aspects of climate services research.
- Collaborate with other projects and initiatives to coordinate user-engagement activities at international conferences and events, linking with academic partners specializing in social sciences for joint studies.
- Address stakeholders' feedback and needs identified in meetings and workshops, facilitating knowledge transfer to and from stakeholders.
- Education
- A PhD in Social Sciences, Human Geography, or a related field, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of social science theories and methodologies.
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Over two years of experience in knowledge co-production and engaging with stakeholders and policymakers.
- Prior involvement in climate change adaptation projects.
- Experience in drafting research project proposals.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in science-policy dialogue and citizen science is highly valued.
- Professional experience with European institutions or international organizations is advantageous.

Employment Conditions
- The position is based at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center within the Earth Sciences Department.
