Role Summary:
The successful candidate will join the Theory and Simulation Group, which specializes in electronic structure methods and their application for atomistic simulations of materials and molecules. The group utilizes SIESTA, a versatile first-principles computational tool based on Density Functional Theory, to analyze systems comprising thousands of atoms. The TranSIESTA extension facilitates the investigation of electronic transport phenomena in nanoscale devices.
Project Involvement:
The Theory and Simulation Group is actively engaged in the HANAMI project, a collaborative initiative involving 14 European research institutions, funded by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking. This project aims to enhance the performance and adaptability of HPC applications across Europe and Japan.
Our contribution to HANAMI will focus on first-principles electrochemistry and battery research, collaborating closely with researchers from the University of Tsukuba. The role will involve developing a new interface between the Effective Screening Medium (ESM) and the latest SIESTA versions, validating and benchmarking this interface, and applying it to scientific inquiries. Additionally, the optimization of SIESTA on advanced HPC infrastructures in Japan will be a key responsibility.
Main Responsibilities:
- Lead the integration of ESM with the latest SIESTA code versions.
- Benchmark and optimize SIESTA, including the ESM module, on significant HPC systems.
- Conduct simulations of materials for energy storage applications, collaborating with international partners.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of innovative methodologies for studying electrochemical processes.
- Prepare scientific reports, journal articles, and software documentation.
- Travel to Japan for collaborative efforts and contribute to grant applications for travel funding.
Qualifications:
- Education: PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience: Proficiency in DFT-based methods and first-principles electronic structure calculations.
- Programming Skills: Experience with FORTRAN.
- Language Proficiency: Strong command of English, both written and spoken.
- Desirable: Experience with electrochemical simulations, SIESTA, ESM, and familiarity with HPC systems.
