Barcelona, Barcelona, España Barcelona Supercomputing Center A tiempo completo
Overview and Objectives
The Earth Sciences Division at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), under the guidance of Prof. Francisco Doblas-Reyes, is engaged in pioneering research utilizing global climate models to conduct a variety of climate experiments at cutting-edge spatial resolutions. We are seeking a research engineer or scientist to support the advancement of high-resolution global simulations using the IFS/NEMO climate model. Candidates with a robust scientific background are highly encouraged to apply.

The selected individual will initially contribute to the creation of a Climate Digital Twin aimed at Climate Adaptation, leveraging the IFS-NEMO-SI3 global model as part of BSC's involvement in the Destination Earth European initiative. This initiative aims to provide state-of-the-art climate simulations with unmatched precision. Subsequently, the candidate will play a vital role in the European Project EERIE, employing a global eddy-resolving version of IFS-NEMO-SI3 to explore the implications of ocean mesoscale interactions on future climate change, a phenomenon that has not been previously examined at coupled global scales.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Modify and validate various model features to ensure the IFS-NEMO-SI3 model produces scientifically accurate climate simulations.
  • Collaborate with Earth Sciences Division colleagues to evaluate the latest model developments, troubleshoot potential model issues, and optimize experimental efficiency.
  • Execute and assess numerical simulations for model calibration and initialization.
  • Contribute to the finalization and evaluation of the Destination Earth and EERIE experiments from a scientific perspective.
Qualifications
  • Educational Background
    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field.
    • A PhD and relevant experience in meteorology or oceanography will be considered advantageous.
  • Required Skills and Experience
    • Proficient in high-level programming languages (notably FORTRAN) and experienced with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (such as bash, Python), and debugging tools.
    • Familiarity with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere, and other Earth system components.
    • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) architectures and parallel programming is preferred.
    • Knowledge of version control systems (SVN or Git) is advantageous.
  • Competencies
    • Strong and constructive interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
    • Capability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
    • Proficiency in English.

Employment Conditions
  • The position is based at BSC within the Earth Sciences Division.
  • We offer a full-time contract in a supportive work environment, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, flexible working hours, comprehensive training programs, meal vouchers, private health insurance, and assistance with relocation.
  • Contract Duration: Open-ended, linked to the technical and scientific activities of the project and budget availability.
  • Vacation: 23 paid vacation days, in addition to the 24th and 31st of December as per our collective agreement.
  • Compensation: A competitive salary commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience, aligned with the cost of living in Barcelona.
