BSC’s mission is to research, develop, and manage information technologies to facilitate scientific progress across life, earth, and engineering sciences.Context And MissionWe seek a Machine Learning Engineer to join the Earth Sciences department within the AI Factory initiative. The AI Factory accelerates AI adoption across industry sectors, providing training, networking, and innovation support. The selected candidate will support the development and deployment of AI services related to climate change, coordinate AI software integration on the MareNostrum5 AI partition, and collaborate with consortium members and domain scientists.Key DutiesSupport the documentation and curation of AI software employed in the AI FactorySupport the deployment and maintenance of AI software on MareNostrum5 AI partitionDesign, implement, and optimize machine‑learning pipelines for environmental‑related applicationsCollaborate with domain scientists and external users to develop AI solutionsSupport users from the AI Factory in accessing and utilising AI tools and servicesParticipate in collaborative development within the AI Factory consortiumParticipate in technical reporting and scientific publications relating to the AI Factory software, with opportunities to be involved in academic papers and project reportingRequirementsEducationBachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Environmental Sciences, or a related fieldEssential Knowledge and Professional ExperienceStrong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Scikit‑learnProven experience developing and training machine‑learning models, especially deep‑learning architecturesBackground in handling, analysing, and validating large‑scale datasetsExperience in a UNIX‑based computational environmentAdditional Knowledge and Professional ExperienceFamiliarity with climate, weather, and Earth‑system datasets (NetCDF, Zarr)Experience in high‑performance computing and parallelised machine‑learning workflowsProficiency in GPU‑accelerated frameworks such as TensorFlow, RAPIDS, JAX or distributed training with DaskUnderstanding of climate and weather modelsCompetencesStrong problem‑solving and analytical skills with the ability to optimise computational workflowsAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively in a research environmentExcellent communication skills and the ability to document and present research findingsProficiency in written and spoken EnglishConditionsThe position will be located at BSC within the Directors DepartmentFull‑time contract (37.5 h/week) with a supportive work environment, flexible hours, and an extensive training planDuration: 3 yearsHolidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December (collective agreement)Salary: competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, according to the cost of living in BarcelonaStarting date: ASAPApplications Procedure and ProcessAll applications must be submitted via the BSC website and contain:A full CV in English including contact detailsA cover/motivation letter in English, stating the specific area and topics for which the applicant wishes to be considered. Two professional references must also be included.Recruitment ProcessThe selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system (‘Concurso‑Oposición’). The recruitment process consists of two phases:Curriculum Analysis – evaluation of experience, degrees, and training (40 point scale)Interview phase – technical, administrative, and personality assessment (60 point scale). A minimum of 30 points out of 60 is required for eligibility.All candidates will receive feedback following the interview stage.
