**Marine and Conservation Research Programmes **_**(with relocation to Tenerife)**_

**There are eight research positions on offer,** two in each of the below areas. Based in Tenerife and building on thirty years of continuous data collection with resident and migratory whales and dolphins, we are looking for eight individuals to acquire the skills and experience necessary to take our methods to cetacean projects across the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network (AOCN) and further afield
- Pink River Dolphins in Colombia, Blue Whales in Sri Lanka, Humpback Whales in Sao Tome and Uruguay, Right Whales in Argentina etc.
- We are looking_ for people who want to make a real difference, who are prepared to train themselves in our methods and who are ready to be deployed globally to disseminate our skills and experience to where they are most needed.

**Areas**:
**Photo Identification
- Two positions**:We have thirty year’s continuous data sets on Resident Short Finned Pilot Whales (we are tracking 13 families) and the ‘local’ Bottlenose Dolphin family, as well as on migratory species including Fin Whales, Orca, Beaked whales and, in total, 28 species, over a third of all cetacean species. Currently, our focus is on identifying family structures in the 13 pilot whale families we follow and on understanding interactions between the different families.

**Acoustics
- Two positions**:We use hydrophones on some whale-watching boats and on our own private rib. Our focus is resident Short Finned Pilot Whales and the local Bottlenose Dolphin community. We have identified family dialects and want to explore how these evolve over time. We are particularly keen to use the work and experience gained to work with Humpback whales later in the year in Uruguay and Sao Tome.

**Land-based observation
- Two positions**:We aim to liaise with the whale-watching boats we work with in developing land-based management programmes that minimise the impact of whale-watching boats on cetaceans visited. We are also monitoring the impact of ferries and pleasure craft, particularly jet skis, on cetacean behaviour.

**Sublittoral
- Skills and experiences gained will be deployed across the AOCN (Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network) and further afield. We will be working with cetaceans in 13 countries across the world this year and want to be in a position to offer our expertise._

**Full Brief**

Eight full-time paid positions available in 4 different areas of research

Minimum two months training and experience based in Tenerife with the expectation that

successful applicants will use this knowledge in different research projects around the world

to gain further experience (Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Jamaica, Belize, Guyana, Cape Verde,

Madeira, El Hierro/La Gomera, South Africa, Sao Tome, Nigeria, Sri Lanka).

**Our expectations of successful applicants**:

- Complete all training and inductions.
- Read all training manuals and relevant scientific research papers. Convey understanding of these topics to research mentors.
- Help in weekly tasks of monitoring and data collection on our 4 research platforms:
1. Land-based station - monitoring cetacean behaviour with and without boats present.

2. RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) - incorporating passive acoustic monitoring, recording cetacean behaviour and photo identification.

3. Whale watching boats - centred around photo identification, recording cetacean behaviour, and raising public awareness amongst tourists.

4. Subliteral
- monitor baseline data collection with seagrasses (in collaboration with a global seagrass conservation group), a sea horse colony, invasive black urchins, and fish species, and monitor water quality and sediment pollution.
- Meet weekly goals set out by the research mentor.
- Work towards a personal research paper with the research mentor. The personal project must align with our research programme's outcomes.
- Take part in daily reflection meetings, which are a vital part of our experiential learning
- process.
- Take part in workshops to continually improve and learn as the placement proceeds
- Become an expert in using DSLR cameras, telescopes/binoculars for land-based research and hydrophones.
- Get involved with our outreach programme helping to communicate our scientific data to the general public.
