- The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 800 staff from 55 countries.

- We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research.**Context And Mission**
- The group has three main lines of research: Data visualization, Data Analytics, and Urban Data Science. Across all the lines are common infrastructure and analytical tools like numerical optimization techniques or rapid prototyping platforms. In particular, the Urban Data Science line has started a large project towards building a city digital twin, which will require developing a platform for integrating geospatial information with multiple simulation and statistical models of city systems. The project also entails working with industry and administrations to ensure future growth of the tool.
- The role of this position will be to lead and coordinate the urban digital twin research line, providing guidance and support for the researchers and developers, establish collaborations with external institutions directly or through shared PhD. students, and to actively secure funding to grow the research line in the future. Technical contributions in transversal areas like numerical optimization strategies are also expected.**Key Duties**
- Provide guidance and coordination to the other researchers and developers in the team
- Interact with urban science specialists to understand the problems, the origin and nature of all pertinent data, and use this knowledge to construct sensible and correct prediction models.
- Develop and implement linear and non-linear (e.g. stochastic) optimization algorithms
- Establish collaborations with leading institutions in urban data science and secure funding for growth and expansion of the line
- Coordinate and take responsibility for all periodic reports of project progress
- Collaborate with other members of the group to learn and transfer knowledge and technology that could be useful for other projects (safeguarding confidentiality and exclusivity agreements to be signed at arrival)

**Requirements**:

- Education
- PhD in applied Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience with stochastic optimization, scheduling problems, and non-linear optimization methods
- Experience on applied data science projects
- Ample experience on popular languages for data scientists (R, Python)
- Experience on machine learning best practices
- Strong initiative to carry on a multidisciplinary research project involving talking to people on many different fields
- Practical knowledge and experience to build machine learning projects that can be successfully deployed in a production environment
- General knowledge of and experience on distributed and parallel computing, cloud, and big data infrastructures
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Knowledge of financial and energy markets
- Experience with cloud and distributed deployment of machine learning infrastructure
- Setting up machine learning projects in production
- Competences
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
- Excellent communication skills, specially at the level of producing internal documentation (manuals, white papers) for reuse and reproducibility of results

**Conditions**
- The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department
- We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
