The Senior Finance Officer is a key role within our Madrid Business Services team. You will be the first point of contact for senior management and staff in all financial matters, ranging from transactional finance queries while ensuring strong financial controls are maintained, in line with our global standards and best practice, but adapted to local compliance requirements. The role will work closely with the local management team as well as the global finance team, and contribute to our international financial reporting and processes, being the expert for local Spanish requirements.
You will respond to queries from staff in the Madrid office (currently approximately 12 staff) and across the organisation. Reporting to the Client Earth Spain Management Board with the support of the Head of International Financial Accounting to enable you to discharge governance finance responsibilities. You will work closely with other members of the business services teams in Madrid, especially with the Operations Manager.
You will manage external relationships with local accountants, auditors, payroll providers, tax and regulatory authorities, and banks to ensure we obtain the services we need and comply with the necessary local regulations.
**Meet your Manager**
In this role you will be managed by Soledad Gallego, our Head of Spain. Soledad joined ClientEarth in 2019 and is based in Madrid. She focuses on improving the implementation and enforcement of laws that protect habitats and species, especially in the Mediterranean countries within the EU, identifying strategic legal interventions to protect terrestrial, freshwater, and marine biodiversity. Prior to joining ClientEarth, she founded the Environmental Justice Legal Office where she worked as a Lawyer for environmental NGOs, focusing on biodiversity and water policy cases before the Spanish Supreme Court and others.
Main Duties
- Liaise with local external accountants to ensure that they receive all necessary documentation in a timely manner.
- With the support of colleagues, work with local external accountants and local regulators to ensure all regulatory returns, tax filings, and statutory reports are completed accurately and on
- Ensure compliance with local tax regulations and assist with tax queries
- Ensure monthly VAT returns are processed by the local accountant in a timely
- Assist in providing donors with tax certificates on an ad hoc
- Support in the preparation of the Annual Plan to present to Spanish authorities.
- Work with ClientEarth Espana People & Culture team to ensure that staff net pay is uploaded on the bank platform for finance payment approval and deposit in employees bank

Role requirements
- Holder of an Accounting degree and/or studying towards a professional accounting certificate
- Previous experience in a similar financial accounting role, including experience of transaction posting and account reconciliation (essential)
- Knowledge of Spanish charity financial management (desirable)
- Fluent (CEFR level C2) in Spanish (essential)
- Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English (essential)
