- The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. - The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at frontier (storm and eddy-resolving) spatial resolutions. The Department is looking for a senior researcher to assist in the development and analysis of the high-resolution global simulations with the IFS/NEMO climate model. Applicants with a more junior background but demonstrated experience in high resolution modelling are also encouraged.
- The position offered is funded by the European projects EERIE and EXPECT, and involves providing scientific feedback to improve the physical soundness of the a Digital Twin based on IFS-NEMO developed within the Destination Earth initiative, leading the production of cutting edge simulations with a high resolution version of IFS-NEMO, and contributing to their scientific analysis.**Key Duties**
- Provide scientific inputs for the development of the new very high resolution configuration with NEMO4 and IFS
- Performing the production experiments with this new model configuration
- Preparing and submitting supercomputing access proposals to support the production of the high resolution simulations
- Lead scientific analyses on the role of mesoscale air-sea interactions in shaping the response of the atmospheric circulation in the North Atlantic to climate change, and its subsequent impacts on European hydroclimate extremes
- Participate in the supervision of the junior members of the group involved in both projects
- Coordinate the BSC contributions to several project deliverables
- Explore new funding opportunities on high resolution climate modeling and leading the BSC the participation in new proposals

**Requirements**:

- Education
- PhD in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or in a related discipline
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Postdoctoral experience will be valued
Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-review journals
- A demonstrated ability to develop experimental set ups that address specific climate modeling problems
- Experience in ocean/atmosphere modelling (or environmental modelling) and in handling climate model output
- Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python, NCL)
- Experience in handling large datasets, and a minimum knowledge of NetCDF encoding
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Interest and capacity in participating in the writing and, when possible, leading the preparation of research and computing proposals
- Interest in tutoring and/or advising master and PhD students
- Competences
- Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools**Conditions**
- The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department

- Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
