**Job Opportunity**:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Underwriter to join our Property team in Madrid. The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for developing and expanding new business opportunities through production & marketing calls with brokers and clients, marketing to distribution channels, prequalifying new business, and utilizing underwriting acumen to select sound opportunities within company guidelines to maintain profitability.
We are seeking an individual with a solid background in underwriting General Property business, who strives for excellence in every area from analyzing risks to delivering customer and broker service.
You should be comfortable working closely with the Claims team and underwriters and Risk Control engineers from across the broader team. Good data and file management skills are required.
In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help lead and further build a profitable book of business are of the upmost importance.
This position is a great fit for an Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities and underwriting knowledge with an experienced and well-regarded unit within a top global insurance company.
**Duties & Responsibilities**:
- Develop and build a profitable book of General Property business with a stronger focus on medium to high severity occupancy types
- Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships
- Underwrite assigned accounts while ensuring appropriate analysis and documentation
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitability
- Collaborate to develop and strengthen the Spanish branch operations beyond the regular underwriting activities
**Qualifications, Skills and Experience**:
- 5+ years of underwriting experience in the General Property line of business
- Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly
- Strong underwriting acumen
- Experience and strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts
- Experience marketing to specialized brokers
- Strong collaboration and team building skills
- Strong communication skills including negotiation, communications, and presentation experience
- Analytical mindset: approaching problems in a logical, structured, and data-driven manner; being curious, asking questions, and seeking out the best data and analytical tools.
- Engineering or equivalent technical education, and/or strong insurance qualifications are an asset in this role
