Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people's quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the "Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya" (CERCA).

Your role & Our team

IRB Barcelona is seeking a Bioinformatician to join the Comparative Genomic Group.

The Comparative Genomics group, led by ICREA professor Toni Gabaldón, is looking for a bioinformatician to work in the context of comparative genomics and phylogenomics. The group, which is jointly affiliated with the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC-CNS), is involved in projects covering evolutionary and comparative genomics, phylogenomics, and metagenomics. The candidate will support various projects, developing and maintaining next-generation sequencing analytical pipelines and resources such as PhylomeDB and MetaPhOrs; creating sequencing analysis pipelines; and processing datasets.

The candidate will collaborate with researchers in the Comparative Genomics Group and other groups at BSC and IRB. The position offers access to a high-performance computing environment and state-of-the-art systems.

This position is co-funded by the project PCI2022-135066-2, financed by MICIU/AEI and the European Union "NextGenerationEU"/ PRTR.

Key responsibilities:

  2. Training and testing AI-based predictive models
  3. Supporting program development
You have:
  1. Experience: Python, R, Java or related programming, HPC environment, GitHub
  2. Knowledge: Machine learning and AI applications
  3. Skills: Good command of English
