The _in vivo_ TB Biology Group comprises a multidisciplinary biology team that utilizes deep scientific knowledge and technical capabilities to discover new antitubercular drugs.
It is based in a centre located in Tres Cantos (Spain) working in close contact with other groups (DMPK, modelling, in vitro teams, chemists, project teams,), and participates in several international consortia and external collaborations.
Currently, we are setting up new models to evaluate Host Directed Therapies (HDTs), and a knowledge in Immunology is essential (specifically immunodeficient models and cytometry).
In addition, you will be a team member of different projects being the _in vivo_ representative to participate in their discussions and decisions.
A group of technicians is responsible for all the animal work, but you should be trained to understand the work and help with the animals if required.
Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct experiments, primarily in mice, to support drug discovery programs in tuberculosis.
- Experience in rodent handling, dosing, blood and tissue collection, and measurements of biological function.
- Experience in designing experiments, generating, recording, analysing, and presenting data. Skills in interpreting results and drawing conclusions.
- Able to resolve technical challenges and deliver results efficiently.
- Effective communication (both verbal and written) of scientific ideas and results to internal groups.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a matrix environment.
Accountability
- Conducting in vivo experiments and recording protocols, methods, results, and conclusions in electronic laboratory notebooks.
- Delivery/reporting/discussion of experimental results to/in project teams.
- Recommend appropriate in vivo assays, animal models, and study designs to drug discovery teams
- Setting up of new in vivo (murine) models to evaluate HDTs for tuberculosis.
- Ensure scientific accuracy, integrity, and robustness of the data collected as well as the conclusions derived.
- Accountable for own safety, safety of the team, and welfare of the animals.
- With support from management, accountable for your own continued development as a drug discovery scientist.
- Always work and behave in compliance with GSK values and Code of Conduct.
- Prioritize tasks and support others to contribute to delivery of medicines.
Basic Requirements
- BS, MS, or PhD degree in Biology or related area
- Experience with _in vivo_ biology techniques related to infectious diseases and immunology.
- Experience in cytometry.
- Experience in rodent handling, dosing, drug formulation, tissue harvest, and blood sampling (Category C).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and maintaining laboratory notebooks.
- Fluent in English (main language in Project Team meetings and presentations).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a variety of _in vivo_ studies/techniques to probe disease relevant mechanisms for HDTs and/or tuberculosis.
- Experience in BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3) procedures.
- Experience with _in vivo_ imaging techniques including nuclear medicine (PET-CT).
- Able to translate hypotheses to _in vivo_ study design through independent working.
- Good graphing and statistical analysis skills including use of GraphPad Prism.
- Scientific communication through oral presentations, posters, and/or manuscripts.
- Industry drugdiscovery experience.
