Prototyping Engineer

In this position, you will be immersed in supporting a wide range of multidisciplinary projects coming from all divisions and areas.

Main activities will focus on support to design and manufacturing of rapid prototyping solutions especially in the materials and structures fields but not only.

Our philosophy is to make it happen quickly and simple. For this task you will have available a wide range of design and manufacturing tools.

Responsabilities/tasks:

• Manufacture prototypes using traditional techniques, using a wide range of materials and processes.

Employing both machining and fitting skills with a wide range of materials:
metals, plastics, wood, composites, foams, ceramics, etc.

Machines include both metal and woodworking equipment (CNC 3 axis, laser cutter, 3d printers (FMD and SLA), lathe, hand tools, hot wire cutting, Micro CNC machining, etc.)

• To work from either design drawings to manufacture components, or to propose designs to meet the requirements of the prototype objectives.
• To produce tooling as required to manufacture complex aerodynamic shapes / profiles including molds and templates necessary to produce flight test / development A/C parts.
• To be able to interrogate CAD models and design from scratch simple and complex prototypes
• To be able to create prototype components using additive layer techniques, including post processing CAD models to adapt the design properly for the available equipment without changing the performance or expected behavior of the parts.
• Guide and mentoring of trainees, to provide training and development of both Apprentices and Design Engineers in hands on engineering skills to enhance the capability and skills of the wider Engineering workforce.

• Manage workshop including training of people, welcome tours, manage stock and ensuring health and safety.
• Preparation of structural tests in order to validate emerging technologies and post processing the data to check and validate the results.
• Preparation of wind tunnel tests in order to validate emerging technologies and post processing the data to check and validate the results.

Skills:

• To understand the means of certification and qualification of flight test parts manufactured on behalf of Protospace in any part of the aircraft.
• Basic FEM knowledge for certification issues.
• Writing technical reports for fire and stress safety.
• Basic knowledge of material testing procedures for new materials qualification / certification.
• Designs skills to adapt prototyping design to flight design using Protospace manufacturing methods and skills.
• Coding capabilities for rapid data analysis and interpretation (Python or MATLAB) in order to do presizing of prototypes.
• Basic project management and cost estimation
• Basic knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety golden rules in workshops
• Systems and mechanical integration with focus on rapid prototyping
• Basic knowledge of carbon fiber manufacturing techniques including hand lay up and mold preparation.
• To know the basics about electronic design and programming
• Nice to have: basic knowledge on transversal areas focus on defence, UAV's and/or space launchers
• MUST: Passion and experience of rapid prototyping from design as well as manufacturing perspective
• Knowing Airbus environment is a plus
• Presentation skills (oral and written)
