The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education.

ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level.


Research is organized in five programs:

Climate, Air Pollution, Nature and Urban Health; Environment and Health over the Lifecourse; Global Viral and Bacterial Infections; Malaria and Neglected Parasitic Diseases and Maternal Child and Reproductive Health.

ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.

The overall goal of the Malaria Physiopathology and Genomics group at ISGlobal is to contribute to developing new tools for the control and eventual elimination of malaria through understanding key physio-pathological events of malaria in children and pregnant women.

To this end, the team combines genomics, epidemiology, molecular biology, immunology, and clinical medicine to study parasite and host factors influencing malaria infections.

What We Are Looking for:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE /QUALIFICATIONS:

  • FP2 or Graduate in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology or similar areas.
  • MSc or desire to enrol in MSc program will be an asset

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Experience in nucleic acid amplification techniques (PCR, qPCR) and next generation sequencing (targeted resequencing, wholegenome sequencing, multiplex amplicon sequencing or similar)
  • Availability to travel to Mozambique for research and/or training purposes.

Desired:

  • 12 years of experience in the molecular assays listed above.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of experimental design
  • Ability to collaborate with the team and translate existing research into practical solutions and products

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to molecular activities of the team (mainly nucleic acid purification and amplification techniques) in other research projects
  • Contribute to maintenance of lab databases according to protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Contribute to the management of samples and DNA biobank in coordination with lab responsible.
  • Prepare shipments of samples and/or materials

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Purify parasite genetic material from dried blood spots and rapid diagnostic tests.
  • Perform quantitative analysis of malaria parasites using qPCR.
  • Execute targeted NGS sequencing of malaria parasites from Mozambique.
  • Perform transcriptional analysis of malaria parasites using qRTPCR and other platforms.
  • Contribute to the writing of experimental plans and laboratory protocols.
  • Contribute to management of NGS files and storage of the data.
  • Contribute to preprocessing of NGS data.
  • Data entry into databases.
  • Contribute to organize and manage the project sample biobank.
  • Participate in general activities of ISGlobal laboratory (rotating cleaning and maintenance, orders of materials,)
  • Travel to Mozambique for sample analysis and/or capacitybuilding activities if required.
  • Interact with research teams at CISM-Mozambique, EppiCenter-USA or elsewhere to conduct research activities when required.
  • Participate in team and project meetings and present results if required.
  • Contribute to Malaria Physiopathology & Genomics team's dissemination activities (e.g. science outreach events, gender equity promotion posters)
  • Additional technical duties as assigned.

LANGUAGE LEVEL:

  • Fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of Portuguese, Catalan and/or Spanish will be an asset
