The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.
It is also part of the UK's Spain Network (including offices in nine locations), and it is looking for a Press and Communications Officer to support the British Embassy in Madrid's communication strategy, through the delivery of communications campaigns and media activity that explain UK policies and demonstrate UK values.

You will be empowered to set the direction for your work, using insight and strategic communication skills to design campaigns.
You will also manage relationships with Spanish regional media and play a key role in the Embassy press office. This will include reactive media handling, preparing for Ambassador media interviews and drafting press notices / other materials. You'll also help build up our network of future leaders within the media.What is this role all about?
- Design the next iteration of the Embassy's climate communications campaign and science communications campaign, working with policy leads to set objectives and target audiences.
- Lead the implementation of both campaigns, working with other communication officers, Embassy stakeholders and external partners.
- Lead the evaluation of both campaigns, including implementing any lessons learnt and sharing best practice with London and other UK Embassies in Europe and beyond.
- Own and manage the Embassy's engagement with regional media, including setting up and preparing the Ambassador and other Embassy spokesperson for media interviews and designing the media comms plan for the Ambassador's regional visits.
- Advise and manage reactive media handling, draft media lines, scripts, press notices and other media products.
- Deputise for the Head of Press in the Embassy whilst they are away.
- Play an active role in the communication response to crises.
- Engage in corporate and wider Embassy initiatives.
Experience of working on communications - both reactive media handling in a press office environment and proactive communication campaigns.
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills, including proven stakeholder management experience and the ability to work well in a team.
- Proven ability to work and deliver at pace and juggle different projects, including under pressure.
- Clear ability to think strategically and plan ahead.
- Demonstrable ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to horizon scan and spot opportunities and interdependencies.

This is an (EO) grade, full-time permanent contract. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.
