Runnymede College is a leading coeducational British independent school in Spain, offering a British education to children of all nationalities from ages 2- 18. Runnymede currently educates 1128 pupils. Runnymede’s main aim is to provide an academically excellent, all-around liberal humanistic education to prepare its pupils for adulthood and help them thrive as members of an international community. The education offered follows the British National Curriculum.
A true family-run organisation, Arthur and Julia managed the school until their retirement in 1998. Arthur and Julia’s son Frank and his wife Cristina continued the school’s impressive growth and founded the Junior School in 1987. Frank is Runnymede’s current Headmaster, and his daughter Georgina is Assistant Headmistress, and his son Manuel Powell runs the operations, including the campus development project. Runnymede continues to embody the ideals upon which it is founded, encouraging children to develop a love of learning and independence.
The School is currently being restructured and from September 2024 will be divided into Pre-Prep (Pre Nursery to Year 3), Prep (Years 4 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 13).
Runnymede College Senior School boasts outstanding exam results and outcomes for leavers, with graduates going on to secure places at top universities in the UK and abroad, including Oxbridge, Russell Group, and Ivy League universities.
In June 2023, 58% of our students achieved A-A* at A level, with 97% of grades being A*-C. This is particularly impressive when compared with the 47% of A*-A grades achieved at independent (private) schools in England this year. In addition, 60% of our pupils gained A*-A grades at IGCSE. Once again, this is a truly excellent achievement when compared with the 47% of A*- A grades at GCSE obtained in the English independent (private) school sector.
In the graduating class of 2023, we have two students who will be studying in Oxford; another will begin her course in Natural Sciences at Cambridge. Other top-ranking UK universities welcoming this year’s graduates include St Andrews, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh and Bath. The United States has attracted more pupils than ever, with pupils starting their higher education at Columbia, Stanford, NYU, UPenn and Cornell, amongst other excellent colleges.
A number of our students will be staying in Spain, at top-notch places including ICADE, IE and Navarra; others will continue their education elsewhere in Europe in world-leading institutions such as Sciences Po in France, ETH in Zurich, and several excellent universities in The Netherlands, including Eindhoven and Rotterdam.
The school is seeking to appoint a Deputy Head Academic & Curriculum for the Senior School from September 2024.
The Deputy Head (Academic & Curriculum) is responsible for promoting a vibrant and dynamic academic culture within the Senior School, working to ensure the highest standards of teaching, learning, and academic attainment. They work closely with the Heads of Department and other senior staff to ensure effective development and delivery of the academic curriculum. They are actively involved in overseeing teaching and learning practice and the efficient management of academic departments.
Runneymede College are looking for someone from a strong academic background, who can show an extensive track record of achieving excellent results at GCSE and A-Level and academic management in middle or senior leadership positions. The successful candidate will bring a commitment to the values of the school, a clear educational philosophy and the energy and dynamism to contribute to the life of the school.
The DHA will be expected to:
• Oversee the academic tracking, monitoring and support of Senior pupils
• Line Manage Senior School HoDs and SENCOs
• Line Manage Staff Development and oversee professional induction, development and review
• Line Manage the Exams Officer
• Keep abreast of educational developments in UK and current research, trends and issues relevant to the academic life of the Senior School
• Ensure the school is prepared for inspection / To lead on the academic areas of inspection preparation
The above list is not fully comprehensive; the DHA may be asked to perform additional tasks related to the academic oversight of the Senior School.
The DHA will report to the Headmaster, Assistant Headmistress and Senior Deputy Head.
The successful applicant will have:
a strong academic background with an honours degree from a top university, preferably in a STEM subject a PGCE or other equivalent qualified teacher status recent experience in a UK school and familiarity with the independent sector extensive experience of academic management at middle or senior levelsexperience of curriculum and staff management outstanding teaching record and evidence of achieving excellent results at GCSE and A Levelvision and strategic insight to plan whole school policy and practice a good eye for detail flexibility and resilience outstanding time management, problem-solving, communication and organisational skills high standards and outstanding levels of professional and personal integrity a clear educational philosophy showing ambition, breadth, and a sense of funthe ability to understand, use, and encourage a variety of teaching and learning styles highly developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively and productively with pupils, staff and parentsbe a native level english speaker strong ICT skillsOther preferable but not essential criteria:
